Dear Partners –
The Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association<http://www.oregonapa.org/> (OAPA) offers training and technical assistance to communities around the state, and has taken a great interest in health in the past several years – if you attended a workshop given by Jim Sallis, M.D. of Active Living Research when he toured around Oregon a couple of years ago, that was OAPA working with HPCDP!
OAPA was recently awarded their second Plan4Health<http://plan4health.us/> project grant. This is a joint project of the Centers for Disease Control and American Planning Association. As part of that, OAPA is now looking for ONE partner community to receive free assistance to address health issues with a city/town or regional planning component, specifically:
1) Increasing physical activity through active transportation (walking, biking, or transit), and/or
2) Increasing access to healthy food.
The deadline has just been extended (the web site still says Jan 23 but that is incorrect) so do not delay – reach out to your local planning nor community development partners.
For questions about this program, please contact Becky Steckler at becky at oregonapa.org<mailto:becky at oregonapa.org> or 503.889.6536

Communities around Oregon face a range of pressing needs – economic development, social equity and affordability, revitalization, resiliency, and consensus building – but not all have the expertise or resources to tackle the issues. OAPA wants to help. Through our new Community Assistance Planning Program (CAPP), volunteer planners hold one- to two-day workshops to help communities break through planning challenges and come up with practical, implementable recommendations.
The program is designed to bring planning resources and opportunities to communities that would otherwise not have access to these services or planning expertise, and to strengthen the ability of community members to influence or determine decisions that affect their quality of life. CAPP workshops seek to foster community education and civic engagement.
The CAPP is a pro bono program, meaning that the program provides the time of planning experts to a community without compensation. However, the community is expected to cover travel expenses and accommodations (limited funding from OAPA may also be available to help defray travel costs and on-site expenses).
Your community can apply for a health and planning related project, or you can apply to volunteer for an economic development project (already selected) or the health and planning related project.
