CADCA is holding its Mid-Year Training Institute (MYTI) July 23 – 27, 2017 at the Marriot Marquis Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia! The MYTI includes four days of training sessions and features leading speakers in the prevention field, as well as provides plenty of opportunities to network with hundreds of people working on public health prevention and other health-related activities from across the county and around the world.
The Geographic Health Equity Alliance (GHEA) is hosting four interactive training sessions at this year's MYTI. The topics that will be covered include reducing disparities specific to tobacco for the LGBT population, reducing disparities and bringing tobacco cessation into your coalition work using a mobile app, addressing the emerging tobacco product landscape, and addressing hookah and marijuana in your community. The Dynamic Tobacco Product Landscape: Implications for Public Health Policy, Planning, and Practice in the United States
This advanced session, presented by Dr. Teresa Wang, an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Office of Smoking and Health will provide the most up-to-date national data related to emerging tobacco product use in the United States, including electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and hookah. The session will also engage participants in discussing considerations for public policy, planning, and research at the local, state, and national level.
Learning objectives for this session include:
* Describe patterns of emerging tobacco products use, including e-cigarettes and hookah, among U.S. adults and youth
* Describe some of the key conclusions from the 2016 U.S. Surgeon General's report on e-cigarette use among youth and young adults
* Describe the prevalence of e-cigarette advertisement exposure among U.S. middle and high school students, among other factors associated with youth tobacco use
* List interventions that can be implemented at the population level to minimize harms of emerging tobacco product use

Improving LGBT Health Through Local Tobacco Policy Change
Presented by Dr. Regina Washington, the Director of LGBT HealthLink (a GHEA sibling network), Anthony Campo, the Education, Training, and Outreach Manager of LGBT HealthLink, & Dr. Jenna Wintemberg, an Instructor at the University of Missouri and Member of LGBT HealthLink Community Advisory Council. In this interactive breakout session, LGBT HealthLink will discuss an overview of LGBT cultural competency, LGBT tobacco- and cancer-related health disparities, best practices for addressing disparities and engaging LGBT communities and using local policies and communities for change.
Learning objectives for this session include:
* Define LGBT-specific terminology
* Review LGBT tobacco and cancer disparities
* Describe best practices for addressing LGBT disparities and engaging LGBT communities
* Identify local policies for reducing tobacco-related disparities
* Examine strategies to translate tobacco-free living policies into practice

Hookah Hubbub and Marijuana Mystique
Due to the session's popularity at MYTI 2016, Dr. Merlyn Griffiths, Associate Professor of Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Hospitality, and Tourism at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro is back to discuss her work related to hookah and marijuana, including a discussion of the evolution of trends around these products since her MYTI 2016 presentation. The proliferation of hookah smoking among youth and young adults continues. Aided by new technological developments, in addition to the traditional waterpipes, the practice has become stealthily mobile. This session explores the avenues of hookah growth and the emerging practice of infusion with other substances like marijuana. Trends in peer influence are explored as well as growth in the diversity of hookah smoking establishments.
Learning objectives for this session include:
* Having a greater understanding of the shadow industry for hookah establishments
* Understanding the factors leading the convergence of hookah use with other substances like marijuana
* Understanding the terminology of hookah culture and the influence of peer to peer referent

Session 4: Title to be Announced
Presented by Senior Outreach Coordinators from the Tobacco Research and Evaluation Team at the University of Texas at Austin, Ann Marie Newman & Trina Robertson. Tobacco use remains the most preventable cause of death in the United States, and the tobacco landscape is always changing, along with the world around it. This presentation will discuss tobacco cessation referral tools, including highlighting success stories of a mobile application for electronic referrals in Texas that can help to modernize proven intervention methods. Additionally, the presentation will combine resource information along with teach-back sessions and role play to help participants increase awareness of tobacco cessation referral tools and methods to motivate patients to quit. Participants will also gain insight and increase capacity to address cessation among populations affected by the smoke-free public housing rule and to address cessation among populations with substance abuse disorders and mental illnesses.
Learning objectives for this session include:
* Learn about the high impact of tobacco use on people with other substance addictions
* Learn about new tobacco products that are being marketed in our communities
* Learn about tobacco quitline services available nationally to support anyone who is ready to quit
* Learn about referral tools that can help providers and community coalition work together to increase tobacco cessation in your communities
