Good afternoon, all.

Oregon Health Authority’s Smokefree Oregon<https://smokefreeoregon.com/> launched a tobacco cessation media campaign this week, and we need your help! The campaign encourages people who use tobacco-including cigarettes, e-cigarettes and all other products- to call the Oregon Tobacco Quit Line to get support to quit. It also encourages health care providers to talk with their patients about quitting. The campaign launched this week and will run through mid-February.

It’s always important for providers to talk with their patients about quitting tobacco. Now the urgency has increased with the recent outbreak of acute lung injury from vaping, as well as the dramatic increase in vaping by young people. Vaping is not an FDA-approved way to quit smoking; studies have shown it may sustain nicotine addiction. Additionally, the aerosol from vaping contains harmful chemicals, including carcinogens.

Six out of ten people in Oregon who smoke want to quit<https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/fast_facts/index.htm>, and studies have shown a majority of people who smoke expect their doctor to talk to them about it. In fact, a doctor’s advice and assistance <https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2013/p0522-talk-to-doctor.html> more than doubles the odds<https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2013/p0522-talk-to-doctor.html> that a person who smokes will quit successfully<https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2013/p0522-talk-to-doctor.html>.

We’ve created digital media toolkits to help you extend the reach of this campaign locally. Please visit our www.healthoregon.org/vaping<http://www.healthoregon.org/vaping> or Strategic Communications Resources<https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/CHRONICDISEASE/HPCDPConnection/Tobacco/Pages/TobaccoMedia.aspx> page on HPCDP Connection to find zip files for Local Public Health Authorities, Coordinated Care Organizations, Providers, and Pharmacies. The toolkits include:
● A press release for LPHAs
● Talking points for LPHAs
● Sample op-ed for LPHA partners
● Fact sheet for patients
● Fact sheet for parents and educators with tips for how to identify signs of vaping among youth and help them quit
● Fact sheet for youth on the dangers of vaping and how to get help to quit
● Posters for waiting rooms and exam rooms
● Social media content for CCOs or providers to post on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
● Email or newsletter content for CCOs to send to providers, encouraging them to talk with their patients about quitting tobacco
● Email or newsletter content for CCOs or providers to send to members/patients
● Half-page sign for pharmacy staff with instructions on how to help customers who want to quit tobacco

Thank you in advance for your help. We’ll go over the campaign resources in upcoming calls, and your community liaisons can also help you think of how to make use of these resources. These resources are a great way for County TPEP Grantees in Tiers 1 through 3 to meet their strategic communications reporting requirements.

Let me know if you need any additional information to join us in this campaign and help people in Oregon break their addiction to tobacco.

Thank you,
Sarah
