1. Oregon retail pharmacists are beginning to prescribe FDA-approved medications for quitting tobacco. After receiving appropriate training, Oregon retail pharmacists can prescribe all FDA-approved cessation medications to walk-in customers. The Oregon State University, College of Pharmacy, Continuing Education Department, with support from HPCDP, is currently training pharmacists to implement Oregon Board of Pharmacy protocols that allow them to prescribe these medications. Once pharmacists complete the training, OSU will share the locations of these pharmacies with HPCDP, and we will share them with you. OSU anticipates more participation after COVID vaccine rollout smooths out (approx. March 2021). The attached slides from the December 14, 2020, presentation provide more information. 1. Beverly Hills and Manhattan Beach, California Make History for Public Health through Ordinances to Ban the Sale of Commercial Tobacco! On January 1st, two small cities in California made giant strides for public health by removing tobacco products from all store shelves. Beverly Hills and Manhattan Beach, both in the Los Angeles area, became the only jurisdictions in the U.S. to eliminate the sale of commercial tobacco, although other jurisdictions are seriously considering it. Both cities included a phase-out period to allow retailers to adjust and to help people who smoke to quit. For more information please visit: https://ash.org/california-jan1-2021/
1. FDA and Scholastic partner on e-cigarette education materials and announce student poster contest! The FDA continues to work with Scholastic to develop youth e-cigarette prevention materials for middle and high school students. A student magazine and an accompanying teacher guide are now available to teach students about the risks of e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction. Scholastic has also launched the "Vaping's Not My Thing" Student Challenge<http://www.scholastic.com/youthvapingrisks/index.html?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery>. Students are asked to create a poster that convinces teens not to vape because of the health risks. Entries will be accepted until March 22, 2021 and will be judged on, among other things, scientific content and persuasiveness. Prizes will be funded by Scholastic and awarded in spring 2021. If you work with schools or other youth prevention partners, feel free to share the resources and notice about the contest. Contact Scholastic with questions at scholasticsubmissions at scholastic.com<mailto:scholasticsubmissions at scholastic.com>.
