<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">This is the first monthly update on the statewide tobacco and alcohol retail assessment.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">The tobacco and alcohol retail assessment aims to gather statewide point-of-sale data at tobacco and alcohol retailers. The widespread availability of tobacco and alcohol products and the visibility of tobacco,
alcohol and sugary drink marketing at point-of-sale remain a significant public health concern, particularly in low socio-economic communities or neighborhoods with higher density of communities of color.</span><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">HPCDP staff will be sending out updates monthly now that the assessments are in full swing. We’ll include how things are going, observations from the field, and resources for work in the retail environment.

<i><span style="line-height:106%">“Clackamas County TPEP and ADPEP are jumping right in. We are enjoying learning from each other and combining our strengths for the best prevention outcomes. This month’s example is the Clackamas County Prevention Coalition
(CCPC) helping with the alcohol and tobacco retailer assessment. Coalition members have volunteered to help with the assessment, which increases our capacity making it easier for us to assess all of the retailers and include all of the optional questions.
Coalition members are learning a lot, it’s been there is so much to see that I had taken for granted and hadn’t noticed before. For example, kid friendly items right next to alcohol, cigarettes and paraphernalia are common most places we go. I now also see
how alcohol associated with sports activities would appeal to kids [photo attached]…I’ve also learned about trends I might not have otherwise known about, like that youth are taking the tobacco out of cigars and refilling them with marijuana to make a “blunt”.
In fact, I didn’t even know they were calling it a “blunt”. A lot of us partnered up for the assessment activities and it turned out we noticed different things and had meaningful discussions about our observations…This is just a few of the eye-opening things
I experienced, while encouraging others to participate in the assessment for their own learning.”
