ALBANY HISTORIC DISTRICT EXPANDS

The Monteith Historic District in Albany was recently expanded to
include an additional 78 historic properties along the existing
district*s southwest border. The original Montieth Historic District
was listed in February 1980 and included 418 buildings.

The Montieth Historic District represents Albany*s historic
development and popular architectural styles from the mid 19th century
through the end of World War II. The community that would eventually
become the City of Albany was started in 1848 when Walter and Thomas
Montieth platted about 60 acres near the Willamette River to form the
original town plat. A few years later, fellow settler Abner Hackleman
expanded the city by platting an additional 70 acres. 

Development of the area occurred within the two plats and was spurred
by the timber and agriculture industries. In the 20th century,
manufacturing and the construction of Camp Adair contributed to the
town*s success. Buildings within the newly added area include mostly
early 20th century buildings in the Queen Anne, Craftsman, Minimal
Traditional and Ranch styles that span this important period in
Albany*s history.

Oregon*s State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation
recommended the building*s nomination in June 2008. Eighteen Albany
properties, including four historic districts, are now listed in the
National Register, which is maintained by the National Park Service
under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

EXHIBITS OPENING AT ARCHITECTURE CENTER

Several new exhibits will be visible until early 2009 at the
Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Ave., Portland

"Historic Preservation in Portland - A Lasting Legacy" shows how
Portland's early preservation success was based on a working partnership
between "grass roots" preservationists, including Jerry Bosco, Ben
Milligan, and Eric Ladd, and working architects, including George
McMath. Their efforts created a lasting legacy of significant
architectural resources.  This exhibit tells the transformation of
West's Block into the Architectural Heritage Center. It also illustrates
how a small group of people led by example to help found the
preservation movement in Portland. 

"Salesmen's Samples - Very Portable Hardware" explains the work of
traveling hardware salesmen. A sample can be better than a thousand
words or even a picture, when it comes to making a sale. The traveling
hardware salesman was equipped with the best examples of his offerings,
and they became the key to successful
merchandising of door hardware. "Salesmen Samples" exhibits rare
"traveling" hardware samples, as well as mounted hardware, from the late
19th century into the
1950s. Hardware produced as advertising "souvenirs" will also be
included. 

"Angels in the Architecture" shows winning images from the
Architectural Heritage Center's annual photography contest captures
surprising artistic details in the built environment of Portland.

OHS LIBRARY TO CLOSE FOR MAINTENANCE

The Oregon Historical Society Research Library will be closed Jan.
11-19 for collections maintenance.  Regular hours will  resume Jan. 20.

AASLH AWARD NOMINATIONS AVAILABLE

The American Association for State and Local History invites
submissions for its 2009 Leadership in History Awards. Now in its 64th
year, the Leadership in History Awards recognizes achievement in the
preservation and interpretation of local, state, and regional history.
Nominees need not be members of AASLH to qualify. Nominations are due to
Oregon AASLH award representative Keith Petersen by March 1.
