EXTRAVAGANZA REGISTRATION FORM AVAILABLE

You can begin registering for the Northwest History and Heritage
Extravaganza taking place April 15-18 in Portland.

The Extravaganza will combine the Oregon Heritage Conference and the
Pacific Northwest History Conference, along with the annual meetings of
the Northwest Archivists and the Northwest Oral History Association,
into a sesquicentennial special.

The Extravaganza's theme of "Rendezvous 2009!" reflects the sharing of
ideas, perspectives, skills and cultures in Oregon and the Pacific
Northwest that will take place. 
 
The Extravaganza will inform and inspire people. Attendees will include
community leaders, staff and volunteers from historical societies,
museums, historic cemeteries, ethnic organizations, schools, historic
preservation commissions, humanities groups, the tourism industry,
economic development, history buffs and professional historians,
archaeologists, youth, and local, tribal, state and federal governments.
All will be welcome at the Extravaganza.
 
The Extravaganza also will include the third annual Oregon Heritage
Excellence Awards; presentations by university students who have been
selected as Oregon Heritage Fellows; more than three dozen panel
sessions; a half dozen workshops; and several tours.

FLORENCE AIRPORT TO BE FEATURED

Bill Foraker will talk about the history of the Florence airport at the
Siuslaw Pioneer Museum at 7 p.m. Feb. 27. Foraker has served on the

HISTORICAL SOCIETY SEEKS MANAGER

The Southern Oregon Historical Society in Jacksonville seeks a
full-time museum manager.  The museum manager is responsible for
day-to-day coordination of operations and events at the society*s
historic sites in Jacksonville with the goal of providing the community
with superior customer service and access to the history of Jackson
County.  The manager is responsible for security of the sites and
oversight of museum staff, both volunteer and paid.  The manager is
responsible for development and management of the society*s volunteer
and docent programs.  In addition, the manager develops and manages the
society*s History Store with the goal of enhancing income growth.

FORT VANCOUVER's ROLE in 1860s TO BE EXPLORED

The First Oregon Volunteers will host a "School for the Civil War
Solider" as part of an event honoring the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial
from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Pearson Air Museum, 1115 E. 5th St.,
Vancouver. The First Oregon Volunteers will also be part of a color
guard opening the program.

Other presentations during the afternoon are by Lincoln actor Steve
Holgate, historians Richard Etulain and Elliot Trommad, musician Doug
Tracy and National Park Service staff.  This program will illustrate the
role Vancouver played in the Civil War and in western development, while
honoring the memory of Abraham Lincoln, one of America's most revered
presidents. Free educational materials include a site bulletin about the
Civil War era at Fort Vancouver, a timeline, and bibliographies. 

This program is co-sponsored by the City of Vancouver, the National
Park Service and the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, with the
Oregon Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. For more information, contact

AMERICAN FOLKLORE SOCIETY TO MEET IN BOISE

The American Folklore Society will hold its 121st annual meeting Oct.
21-25 in Boise. The theme for this meeting is "Examining the Ethics of
Place". The submission deadline for all proposals is March 31.
