STEREOGRAPHY TO BE EXPOSED IN PORTLAND

*History of the Stereo Card* is an exhibit opening March 5 at the
3D Center of Art and Photography, 1928 NW Lovejoy, Portland.

The field of stereography began in 1838, a year before the discovery of
photography. The first simple geometric drawings were soon replaced by
photographs and the need to be able to view them stereoscopically led to
the development and improvement of viewing devices. By the 1860s there
were over 100,000 different views available and the publishing of stereo
cards became a major business with significant competition. 

This exhibition is being mounted in conjunction with an exhibition on
the history of 3D that opens March 12 at the Oregon Historical Society.

HISTORIC CLOTHING WORKSHOP PLANNED IN BAKER CITY

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and Trail
Tenders Inc. are sponsoring a workshop on 1840-1866 clothing April 3-5
in Baker City. 

Elizabeth Stewart Clark will teach costume designers, museum staff and
interpreters, living historians, historical site staff, volunteers and
docents, and anyone who has an interest in learning about, wearing and
making historical women*s clothing. To make reservations, visit

NAGPRA BASIC TRAINING TO BE TAUGHT IN MAY

The national Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
program will host a free basic training May 22 in Seattle. Participants
will be given a basic understanding of the NAGPRA process. Topics
include: an overview of the Act, the consultation and repatriation
process, notices, grants, civil penalties and criminal enforcement. This
training is highly recommended for both new and existing NAGPRA
programs. Pre-registration by April 17  is required. For more

AURORA COLONY TO HOST NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Aurora Colony Historical Society is hosting the 36th annual
conference of the Communal Studies Association on Oct. 1-3 in  Aurora. 
The theme of the conference is "From Eden to Ecotopia" with the  program
committee seeking sessions, panels, and papers that explore the range of
communities that sought to rediscover Eden or who continue to seek an
ideal community based on ecological and sustainable lifestyles.

The deadline for submission of paper and session proposals is May 1. 
To submit a proposal, send a presentation title, a 150-word maximum
abstract, and a 100-word biography and contact information to Jim Kopp,
