TOURISM DEVELOPMENT GRANTS OFFERED THIS SUMMER

The Oregon Tourism Commission has announced the opening of the 2009-10
Matching Grants Program for investment in travel and tourism
organizations across the state. The grant program is part of Travel
Oregon's tourism development mission to assist Oregon communities and
organizations in the creation, enhancement and implementation of quality
tourism plans and products. 

The commission established the program to make grant awards to eligible
applicants for projects that contribute to the development and
improvement of local economies and communities by means of the
enhancement, expansion and promotion of the visitor industry.  Cities,
counties, port districts, federally recognized Tribes and non-profit
entities involved with tourism promotion and development are eligible
for grants from the Matching Grants Program. Applicants must equally
match the amount of the awarded grant; up to 50 percent of the match may
be in-kind. 

The deadline for completing the online electronic application is Aug.

AURORA COLONY HOSTS JUNE 13 COMMUNAL PROGRAM

The Aurora Colony Historical Society presents “Communal Music:
Community and Identity Through Harmony and Song,” the second program
of its “Communal Humanities” series funded in part by the Oregon
Council for the Humanities, the City of Aurora, and co-sponsored by the
Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission. The program takes place at 1 p.m.
June 13 at Christ Lutheran Church, 15029 2nd St. NW, Aurora.

This session examines how music plays an important role in the identity
of communal groups and how the creation and performance of music is tied
with the sense of community. Andrew Willette, an instructor in the
Department of Music at  Portland State University, was involved in the
transcribing, transposing and reconstructing of original scores of
Aurora Colony compositions. He will present on this experience and the
role of music in the Aurora Colony in their day-to-day living. Gail
Robinson, president of the ACHS, directed the “Bring Back the Music”
project and will highlight some of the recently restored instruments and
share some of the related 
stories that these instruments tell. The session will be moderated by
Jim Kopp, who will also discuss how music has been incorporated in many
of the other nearly 300 communal groups in Oregon since the Aurora
Colony was founded in 1856.

HISTORIC CEMETERIES GROUP TO HOLD ANNUAL MEETING

The Oregon Historic Cemeteries Association will host its annual meeting
at 10 a.m. June 13 at the Portland Memorial Mausoleum, 6631 SE 14th St.
The meeting will include a tour of the mausoleum and a meeting over a
brown bag lunch. Stanley Clarke with offer afternoon tours of Powell
Grove and Columbia Pioneer cemeteries.

RANCH FAMILY AUTHOR SCHEDULES JUNE 28 TALK IN BEND

Linda Hussa, award-winning author of "The Family Ranch: Nurturing
Children, the Land and Tradition in the American West"  discusses
keeping family ranch traditions alive in a talk at 1:30 p.m. June 28 at
the High Desert Museum in Bend. The museum is located five miles south

'HISTORY AS BUNK' TALK SLATED JUNE 18 IN PORTLAND

The Northwest History Network presents archivist Geoff Wexler talk on
"History is Bunk: The Past as Myth and Illusion" at 7 p.m. June 18 at
the Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Ave, Portland. This
event is free and open to the public.

Wexler, who is the archivist of the Oregon Historical Society, contends
that "history" is not something that is over and finished, but rather is
an integral aspect of the present moment. All  notions of the past -- no
matter how well-grounded in historical research -- will always be
illusion.
