LEGISLATURE APPROVES HISTORIC CEMETERIES FEE BILL

House Bill 2087, which would prohibit the Secretary of State from
charging fee to file annual report from nonprofit corporation if purpose
of nonprofit corporation as set out in articles of incorporation is to
maintain historic cemetery, has been approved by both houses of the
Oregon Legislature. Introduced at the request of former Secretary of
State Bill Bradbury, the bill also requires a nonprofit corporation
potentially eligible to provide evidence to Secretary of State of
nonprofit corporation's purpose and that the cemetery is listed with
Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries.

JENSEN APPOINTED; CEMETERIES COMMISSION SEEKS APPLICANTS

One appointment has been made to the Oregon Heritage Commission, while
the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries is seeking volunteers to
fill the position of a commissioner who recently resigned. 

Kimberly Jensen, a history professor at Western Oregon University, has
been appointed by Governor Ted Kulongoski to the Heritage Commission.
Besides award-winning teaching at the university, Jensen serves on the
steering committee for the Oregon Woman Suffrage Centennial in 2012, the
editorial board of the Oregon Encyclopedia project, and the editorial
advisory board for the Oregon Historical Society. A book she wrote on
American women in the First World War that was a finalist for a 2008
Oregon Book Award. Jensen's appointment to the Heritage Commission ends
June 30, 2012.

Meanwhile, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, made up of
seven citizens, is seeking applicants for a vacancy. The commission is
particularly seeking a representative from a coastal area of the state,
but all are encouraged to apply. Please apply before June 19. For more

EVENTS SCHEDULED THIS WEEKEND IN SIX CITIES

CLACKAMAS: The Oregon Military Museum's 13th annual Armed Forces
Day/Living History Day will take place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 16 at Camp
Withycombe. Honoring veterans of all wars, the event includes military
equipment, uniforms, campsites, and weapons.The Oregon Military Museum
will be closed during the event because it is moving to another building

CRESWELL:  The Creswell Area Historical Society will show the film
"Restoration" as part of a program at 2:30 p.m. May 17 on the Kalapuya
Indians.  Tribal consultant Carol Logan and Lane Community College
teacher Mark Harris will also make presentations. The free event takes
place at the Cresswell Museum, Fifth Street and Oregon Avenue.

FAIRVIEW:  The history of the Interurban Rail Line in Fairview will be
presented at 2 p.m. May 17 at the Fairview Community Center, Third and
Harrison streets. The line was started in 1872 by Ben Holladay and
discontinued in 1958. The program is free and open to the public. For

PORTLAND: The Oregon Historical Society will host a Family Day Program
on May 16. Activities will include an activity for younger children, a
craft activity, and a "what is it?" table. For more information, visit

PORTLAND:  The Architectural Heritage Center will host a lecture at 10
a.m. May 16 on "Portland*s Cast-Iron Building Heritage: Skidmore - Old
Town". William J. Hawkins III, the author of The Grand Era of Cast Iron
Architecture in Portland, Portland*s Historic New Market Theater, and
Classic Houses of Portland, Oregon 1850 * 1950, will be the presenter.

center is scheduling walking tours of the Skidmore-Old Town area on June
18 and June 20.

SALEM: Mission Mill Museum will host its 25th Annual Sheep to Shawl
from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 16. The event includes sheep-shearing,
blacksmithing, spinning, Cutch oven cooking, weaving, quilting, and lace
making. The Marion County Historical Society and A.C. Gilbert's
Discovery Village will also provide activities. Mission Mill Museum is a
five acre, historical museum that preserves and interprets two homes
from the 1841 Methodist Mission Station in Salem, the 1847 home of the
Oregon Trail traveling John D. Boon Family, the oldest Presbyterian
Church in the Pacific Northwest, and the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill

TROUTDALE: Historian Stanley Clarke will lead a tour of Estacada area
cemeteries. Organized by the Troutdale Historical Society, the tour bus
will leave at 9 a.m. from the Barn Museum, 104 SE Kibling St. For

LADD CARRIAGE HOUSE IN PORTLAND TO BE CELEBRATED

The Friends of the Ladd Carriage House will celebrate the completion of
the exterior restoration of the fabled Ladd Carriage House on May 14.
Beginning at 4 p.m., there will be tours of this 1880s building at SW
Columbia and Broadway in Portland.  The official program begins at 4:45
p.m. and will include a short presentation on the saving of the house as
well as a brief presentation on William S. Ladd and his Legacy.  At 5:15
p.m. there will be an unveiling and dedication of a new plaque
commemorating Ladd and the saving of the Carriage House.  Tours of the
interior will continue until 6 p.m.  When you arrive, look for the event
tent in the courtyard.   

VANPORT, POLK COUNTY CEMETERIES HIGHLIGHT MAY 18

Everyone who has an interest in Polk County Cemeteries is invited to
attend an informational meeting at 1 p.m. May 18 at the Polk County
Museum, which is located at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall.
Please bring information about status of record keeping, maps showing
cemetery location, informational brochures specific to your cemetery,
and plans for cemetery clean-ups, etc.  If you plan to attend, please

provided.

This history of Vanport, a hastily built "temporary" city built in 1942
between the Portland city limits and the Columbia River will be featured
in the May 18 History Pub.  Historian Donna Sinclair will talk about the
impact of the city*s *de-facto* segregation and its aftermath and
shares newly discovered information about the flood. Ed Washington,
former Vanport resident, and others will share their memories of this
important event. History Pub takes place at 7 p.m.at the Kennedy School,
5736 NE 33rd Ave. in Portland. History Pub is a cooperative effort of
the Oregon Historical Society, the Holy Names Heritage Center and
