HALFWAY GOES THE DISTANCE WITH CENTENNIAL
Halfway*s 100th birthday celebration is this week, and Mayor Sheila
Farwell wants to be sure everyone knows they are invited to attend.
Not only can you share in the town*s birthday cake, enjoy a soft
drink, and finger food and desserts provided by local organizations,
visit with neighbors and friends, but also meet visiting dignitaries.
City Hall will be open where the Wall of Mayors can be viewed. All
festivities will be held in the Heritage Square area next to City Hall
on East Record Street.
Listening will also be good. Not only speeches from the politicians and
speech contest winners, but also music from local musicians and students
from Pine Eagle School will please attendees. Want to hear the Halfway
Centennial version of how Halfway got its name? The Class of 2009
valedictorians will tell you. Love Cowboy Poetry? R. E. Sharpe, Eagle
Valley, will recite some of his favorite odes of the West. Keys to the
city will be awarded to deserving recipients.
Set aside noon-3 p.m. May 22 for wishing Halfway many more birthday
happy celebrations. For more information, contact Sheila Farwell,
541-742-4741. Halfway is located 60 miles east of Baker City near the
Idaho border.
