THREE CITIES TO HOST COLLECTIONS PRESERVATION FOCUS GROUPS
You are invited one of three free meetings being held in Medford, Bend and Pendleton to provide input to create a successful plan for collections preservation in Oregon. Sponsored by many museum, library, and archival organizations, the meetings are designed to bring together archives, libraries and museums to plan a better future for Oregon's heritage collections.
A grant from the federal Institute for Museums and Library Services to the Oregon Museums Association on behalf of archive, library, and museum partners throughout Oregon is making the meetings possible to take stock of preservation, training, and disaster preparedness needs. From this a statewide preservation plan to address
those needs will be developed. The plan is a necessary first step to secure funding for future implementation.
The meetings are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Jackson County Library, 205 S. Central Ave., Medford; 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Deschutes County Library Administration Building, 507 NW Wall St., Bend; and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Tamastslikt Cultural Center, 72789 Highway 331, Pendleton.
Refreshments will be provided. Please let us know you are coming so that we can plan adequate seating and refreshments by emailing Ruth Metz at ruthmetz at spiretech.com. For additional information, visit the project website at http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/HCD/OHC/C2C.shtml or contact Metz.
HISTORIC HIGHWAY TRAIL TO HAVE OPEN HOUSE
You are invited to an open house from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 24 in Portland to share plans and receive comments on the last 11-mile segment of the proposed Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail between Wyeth and Hood River.
The open house will take place at the Oregon Department of Transportation Region 1 offices at 123 NW Flanders, Portland. The Portland office is located one-half block north of the "Old Town / China Town" Max light rail stop, which also offers a parking structure.
The Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail Plan provides a plan for development of future facilities along the trail, such parking lots, overnight bike camping, and rest rooms. It also identifies opportunities for view points and overlooks along the route. It also helps plan for and seek the needed funds to reconnect the Historic Columbia River Highway as a significant historic and visitor attraction.
Since 1987, 11 miles of the state trail have been completed. Of the original 73 miles of historic highway, 61 miles are accessible by car on the drivable portions or by foot or bike on the state trail sections. About 11 miles of the state trail await construction. The goal is to complete the remaining 11 miles in time for the 100th anniversary of the Historic Columbia River Highway in 2016.

ARCHIVES INTRO WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON DESCRIPTION
The Society of American Archivists is offering a workshop Sept. 30 in Portland on "Describing Archives: A Content Standard." The workshop will explore strategies for incorporating this standard into workflows for accessioning, arrangement, and description through discussions and hands-on work with a variety of exercises, culminating in a DACS-based analysis of existing finding aids. This workshop, a basic introduction to the standard, focuses on application of DACS rules and concepts, which participants can apply to repository processes and descriptive outputs.
The course will be taught by Bill Landis, the head of Special Collections Research and Instructional Services at the Louis Round Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For more information and registration, visit http://www2.archivists.org/
