SURVEYS DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR ONE WEEK

You still have an opportunity to complete an Oregon Heritage Assessment
Survey. The deadline for completing the surveys has been extended one
week until Feb. 19 .

The Oregon Heritage Commission has launched an assessment of the status
of heritage and heritage organizations in the state, including the
threats they face. The survey is one of the first steps toward
developing a long range strategy for preserving Oregon’s endangered
heritage resources. (One of the surveys is also the 2010 Oregon Museums
Survey.)

You are encouraged to view a PDF of your survey prior to completing an
electronic version.

PRESERVATION PLANNING PROJECT SEEKS COORDINATOR

The Oregon Museums Association, on behalf of a collaboration of Oregon
museums, libraries, archives and cultural institutions, is seeking to
contract for a coordinator of a Connecting to Collections statewide
planning grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The professional project coordinator will facilitate the goals and
activities of the grant project, including meeting and event
coordination, marketing and communications, and steering committee
activities.

The project’s collaborators include the Oregon Libraries Association,
Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, the Oregon Heritage Commission, the
Oregon Historical Society, and OMA.

FOUR PRESENTATIONS SCHEDULED IN PORTLAND

At 7 p.m. Feb. 16, the Portland State University Friends of History
will present "Whodunit: The Burning of Oregon's Capitol in 1935" by Kyle
Jansson. Coming as Oregon concludes its 151st statehood anniversary,
Jansson's presentation focuses on a fire that swept through Oregon's
Capitol. Jansson, the coordinator of the Oregon Heritage Commission, has
talked with witnesses to the fire and reviewed investigative reports
about the event that re-shaped Oregon's government. The talk takes place
at PSU's Cramer Hall, Room 494, at 1721 SW Broadway. The Friends of
History is the non-profit support organization for the History
Department at Portland State University. 

At 10 a.m. Feb. 20, "Energy Efficiency and the Historic Home" will be
the topic of a talk by Joy Sears of the State Historic Preservation
Office. She will offer easy and relatively inexpensive ways to make your
home more energy efficient while keeping its historic character intact.
Whether you want to do-it-yourself or hire someone to do the work for
you, this workshop will provide you with the information needed to get
the job done right. Sears has served as the preservation office's
restoration specialist since 2005. The program takes place at the
Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Ave. For more information

At 7 p.m. Feb. 22, PSU professor Carl Abbott and Thomas Robinson of
Historic Photo Archives will talk about "Renewal and Removal in
North/Northeast Portland" as part of the History Pub sponsored by the
Oregon Historical Society and the Holy Names Heritage Center. The
session focuses on the dramatic changes to the landscape radiating from
NE Broadway and Interstate Avenue beginning in the 1950s. The speakers
explore the policies that determined which buildings are saved and which
are lost. The event takes place at  McMenamins Kennedy School, 5736 NE

At 10 a.m. Feb. 27, “Houses Without Names - Portland’s Everyday
Vintage Houses" will be presented by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
professor Thomas Hubka at the Architectural Heritage Center. Hubka’s
Portland research is a part of a national study of America’s popular
– common – vernacular - everyday houses. This includes the
documentation of duplexes, cottages, bungalows, multi-unit, and
manufactured housing. Instead of classifying housing exclusively by
architectural style – and short-changing an abundance of wonderful
buildings - Hubka emphasizes floor plan and room function analysis (as
well as massing and style). Plan analysis has the advantage of not
excluding any houses, even the most simple. For more information and

DISASTER RESPONSE WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE IN MARCH

"Scenario Planning & Collaboration Among Libraries and Archives to
Improve Disaster Preparedness for Collections" will be a workshop
presentation March 12 at the Portland State University library.

This workshop will help you assess your organization's vulnerabilities,
test your plan using a scenario table top exercise, explore how
collaborations can help you respond to a disaster, and build a shared
vision for disaster preparedness.

Workshop instructors are Barclay Ogden, co-coordinator of the
California Preservation Program and WESTPAS, and Kristen Kern, fine and
performing arts librarian at PSU. Funding is provided by the National
Endowment for the Humanities. The workshop is sponsored by Western
States and Territories Preservation Assistance and co-sponsored by the
Oregon State Library.

Workshop organizers suggest that when possible, your organization
should send 2-3 participants to work together. Organizations should also
have a written disaster plan. For additional information and
