TWO EXHIBITS OPENING IN PORTLAND

The Architectural Heritage Center and the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center
are opening exhibits this month.

Architectural center founders Jerry Bosco and Ben Milligan gave it a
collection of building artifacts, as well as books, catalogs,
photographs, drawings, and other materials for understanding the
Portland region’s architectural heritage. In recent years, the
Bosco-Milligan Foundation has received additional generous donations,
including the libraries of the late architects George McMath and Richard
Ritz, as well as other longtime friends of the organization. 

The documents such as descriptive letters, catalogs, architectural
drawings, photographs, maps, personal papers and eventually entire
“mail order houses” were the means of acquiring materials and
achieving artistry in the crafting of artifacts. The exhibit "Artifacts
+ Archives" opens Jan. 15 and illustrates the connection between
paper-based archival materials in the center's collections and its

The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center begins its 20th year with an exhibit of
photographs by Motoya Nakamura documenting and honoring the veterans and
families of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The 442nd was a unit
consisting entirely of Japanese American men, and they were segregated
from the rest of the army during World War II. Motoya documented local
Oregon Japanese American WWII veterans while they were still living.
Through these photographs and oral histories from the veterans, the
exhibit reveals the hardships, dedication and patriotism of these men.

MODEL TRAINS ON TRACK JAN. 16 at OHS

The last family day events at the Oregon Historical Society before its
"The West the Railroads Made" exhibit concludes features model trains.
The family day activities are from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan 16 at the
society's museum, 1200 SW Park in Portland. Visitors can also look
through a stereo view showing photos of past fairs, and make a souvenir
at the craft table.  In addition, there will be a gallery talk about the
Tom McCall statue. For more information, visit

CASCADES GEOTOURISM MAP TO BE UNVEILED JAN. 19

Travel Oregon and National Geographic invite you to celebrate the
publication of the new National Geographic Central Cascades Geotourism
MapGuide on Jan. 19.

The Central Cascades Geotourism MapGuide is the Northwest’s newest
sustainable travel guide created by the residents of the Central
Cascades from Mt. Rainier National Park to Crater Lake National Park,
with the support of National Geographic.  National Geographic vice
president John Francis will discuss sharing geotourism initiatives
across the globe and how the Central Cascades MapGuide project
contributes to sustainable tourism.

Two events will bring the new MapGuide, and its corresponding
geotourism website www.TheCentralCascades.com to life.  They are at 9
a.m. Jan. 19 at the Heathman Hotel, 1001 SW Broadway, Portland, or from
4-7 p.m. Jan. 19 at Timberline Lodge. For more information about the

CHAMPOEG HOSTS ARCHAEOLOGY EVENT JAN. 16

The archeological process will be featured from 2 p.m. - 3.p.m. Jan. 16
at Historic Champoeg State Heritage Area. Using documentation and
results of previous archeological work at Champoeg to gain insight and
perspective into the land and people who once lived in this area, people
will learn how to be purposeful about the artifacts.  For more

HISTORIC FARM, RANCH APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

Applications are being accepted for the 2010 award year of the Century
Farm & Ranch Program, a statewide recognition program honoring farmers
and ranchers who have worked the same land for at least 100 years. 
Applications are also available for the sesquicentennial award honoring
families with farms or ranches continuously worked for 150 years or
more.

The program, celebrating its 52nd year, is administered through the
Oregon Agricultural Education Foundation and is partially funded by the
Oregon Farm Bureau, the State Historic Preservation Office, the Oregon
Department of Agriculture, the Oregon Travel Information Council,
various county farm bureaus, agriculture-based organizations, and
individuals.

The deadline for applications is June 1. A durable metal road side sign
to identify the family’s farm or ranch as having historic Century or
Sesquicentennial status is also available.  Each family will be honored
during a special ceremony and reception at the Oregon State Fair.

WHITELAW NAMED VICE PRESIDENT AT HIGH DESERT

Dana Whitelaw is the new vice president of programs at the High Desert
Museum, where she will use her doctoral research in wildlife
conservation and extensive background in anthropology to expand its
educational programming. She began natural history, anthropological and
ethnographic research in 1994, and most recently has been a grant writer
at the museum. The High Desert Museum is located on Highway 97 south of
