GROUP SEEKS INPUT ON POTENTIAL FOLKLIFE NETWORK

A group working to re-start an Oregon folklife network is seeking
public comment.  The effort, funded in part by the Oregon Arts
Commission, is facilitated by Bill Flood.

Folklife cultural activities typically focus on arts and traditions.
They often relate to ethnic, regional, occupational, gender, and other
traditional identities.

Committee members would like to know from individuals what services
ought to be provided, what they think the biggest value of a statewide
network would be to them, and if they (or their organization) want to be
involved with a new program.

ARCHIVES SEEKS SUFFRAGE IMAGES FOR BLUEBOOK

The Oregon State Archives is preparing the color insert section for the
forthcoming edition of the Oregon Bluebook.  This 2011-2012 edition will
be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the passage of women's
suffrage in Oregon. 

It is looking to include colorful images of items that may be in
collections throughout the state that relate to women's suffrage.  This
can include posters and broadsides of political campaigns related to
women's suffrage.  Buttons or campaign memorabilia, suffrage attire or
jewelry, sheet music, postcards or any other artifacts related to
women's suffrage.  It is particularly interested in items related to any
of the campaigns or ballot measures relating to Oregon's women's
suffrage movement but are willing to consider items related  to the
larger national campaign for women's suffrage.  Because this section of
the bluebook is printed in full color it is looking for items that are
in fact in color rather than black and white photographs or documents.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The National Council on Public History and the American Society for
Environmental History are seeking student volunteers to help with their
joint conference "Currents of Change" from March 10-14 in Portland.

They want 48 student volunteers to help with registration, the exhibit
hall, and special events. Those who volunteer will receive free
conference registration. The deadline for volunteer registration is Feb.

NORTHWEST ARCHIVISTS OFFER STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Northwest Archivists offer a $300 scholarship to encourage
college-level students to develop their interest in archives
administration as a career choice, through such means as research
projects, unpaid internships and attendance at related conferences,
seminars, workshops, institutes or other educational opportunities. The
application's postmark deadline is April 1. For more information, visit

AMERICAN HISTORY TEACHING GRANTS AVAILABLE

The U.S. Department of Education has announced the opening of the
fiscal year 2010 Teaching American History grant competition. The
deadline for “Notice of Intent to Apply” is Feb. 22. The deadline
for the transmittal of applications is March 22 and the deadline for
intergovernmental review is May 21. Potential applicants are advised to
read the full notice in the Federal Register by visiting the program's

Several Oregon school districts and historical societies participate in
Teaching American History grants.
