GUILD TO SPIN WHEELS, STORIES AT AURORA

The 28th Annual Spinning Wheel Showcase will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 13 and noon-4 p.m. March 14 at Aurora.

This event, presented by the Aurora Colony Handspinners Guild, will feature over 30 antique spinning wheels, in working condition, exhibited by their owners.  Spinners dressed in period costume will be available to tell the story of the wheel. The Aurora Colony Historical Society will host the event at the Old Aurora Colony Museum, located on the corner of Second and Liberty streets.  

Spinning wheels owned by the museum will be displayed, including the rare oscillating pendulum wheel, of which there are only five known to be in existence.  This wheel was developed in the Aurora Colony, and a replica of it will be in use during the showcase.

ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS SEEK CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

The call is going out for papers for the Society of Architectural Historians Marion Dean Ross Chapter 2010 conference in Kelowna, British Columbia.  This year's theme is "Small Cities: Balancing Pasts & Futures in the Pacific Northwest."  Proposals are due May 15 for the conference slated for Oct. 15-17. BARN PRESERVATION FEATURED IN WALLA WALLA

The preservation of historic barn sites in the Pacific Northwest will be the focus of the Heritage Barn Conference on May 6-7 in Walla Walla, Wash.  Sponsored by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Barn Alliance, sessions will include: barn survey and documentation, tools and strategies for rural preservation, easements in barn preservation, barn rehabilitation and adaptive reuse. ARCHIVISTS JOIN TOGETHER FOR NEW PUBLICATION

The Society of California Archivists, the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists, the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists, and the Northwest Archivists, Inc. have established a new peer reviewed open access, online journal the Journal of Western Archives. The journal will explore important Western regional issues in archives, the development of the archival profession in the western United States, collaborative efforts and projects amongst cultural institutions, and other topics important to archivists working in the western United States.

SAVING AMERICA'S TREASURES GRANT DEADLINE MAY 21

Grant applications for the FY 2010 Federal Save America's Treasures Program are now available on Grants.gov.  Detailed program guidelines and instructions for using Grants.gov to apply are found on at http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/treasures/index.htm 

Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov by the due date of May 21.  In FY 2010, the program will have $14.3 million to award. 


EVENT PLANNERS PREPARE FOR APRIL SEMINAR

On April 21, the World Forestry Center will host a seminar for non profit event planners. Presentations by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, Oregon Department of Justice Charitable Activities Sections and the Multnomah County Health Department will help attendees better understand the rules and regulations when planning a fundraiser.
