TRANSPORTATION ENHANCEMENT FUND PROPOSALS SOUGHT

The Oregon Department of Transportation has announced a request for
project proposals in the Transportation Enhancement program.  About $17
million is available statewide for projects that can be ready for
contract in 2013 and 2014.  Projects selected will become part of
Oregon's 2012-2015 statewide transportation improvement program.

The TE program provides federal funds for projects that strengthen the
cultural, aesthetic, and environmental value of the transportation
system.  This can include sidewalk, bike path and streetscape projects,
restoration of transportation-related historic buildings, interpretive
sites that help travelers appreciate the scenery and history along
Oregon roads and highways, viewpoints, archaeological planning and
research, and other purposes.

Projects are selected through a statewide competitive process based on
written application and field review. Applicants may include local,
state or federal agencies, Indian tribes, and tax-funded districts.  A
private organization may apply in partnership with a public agency.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH FAIR SLATED AT CAPITOL

Sixteen organizations will participate from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. May 20 in a
Historic Preservation Fair at the Oregon Capitol. 

Participating organizations include Mission Mill Museum, Salem
Landmarks Commission, Deepwood Estates, Willamette University, Oregon
State Hospital Museum, Bush House Museum, Oregon State Parks and
Recreation Department, Oregon Cultural Trust, State Parks, Oregon
Department of Transportation, Oregon State Archives, Oregon State
Library, and from  the state's Historic Cemeteries and National Register
programs will have tables as will the Oregon Historic Trails Advisory
Council, the Oregon and California Trails Association, and the Oregon
Century Farm and Ranch Program. 

The Oregon Capitol will offer a 30-minute tour of the building at 11:30
a.m. and State Capitol Park Ranger Jim Bader and his team will lead
tours of the Capitol grounds at 12:15 p.m..

AURORA EVENT MAY 15 HIGHLIGHTS GIESY'S LIFE

Emma Wagner Giesy, an Aurora Colony member, died on May 17, 1916.  Jane
Kirkpatrick's Change and Cherish Historical Series was written about her
life.

On May 15, the Aurora Colony Museum will feature Kirkpatrick at an
event highlighting Giesy. Following a book signing, Kirkpatrick will
talk about Giesy. This will be followed by a visit to the Aurora
cemetery where the gravesites of Giesy and other colony members are
located. The visit will include a presentation by museum curator Patrick
Harris.

POTTER AWARD APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 28

Each year the State Historic Preservation Office provides financial
assistance to recipients of the Elisabeth Potter Historic Preservation
Education and Advocacy Awards   to help cover travel expenses to
historic preservation-related conferences and workshops. The purpose of
this funding is to encourage people to obtain new skills in support of
their local community's preservation efforts or specific projects.

Over the years, Potter Award winners have traveled to meetings and
other gatherings that focused on cultural landscapes and gardens,
historic cemeteries, preservation and historic renovation trades,
cultural resource management issues, and historic roads as well as the
development of effective preservation organizations.

The deadline for submission of applications is May 28. Winners will be
announced by mid-June.

ENCYCLOPEDIA HOSTS ACTIVITIES IN NEWBERG, BAKER CITY

The Oregon Encyclopedia is seeking entries from  all parts of the
state, with special attention to smaller communities. As part of this
effort it is hosting meetings that include  an overview of the Oregon
Encyclopedia, a discussion on how to write an Oregon Encyclopedia entry
and information on library resources that support the research and
writing of local history.The meetings encouraged open discussions of
significant events, people, places, and institutions. 

The next meetings are scheduled at 10 a.m. May 15 at the Newberg Public
Library, 503 E. Hancock St., and at 10 a.m. May 22 at the Baker City
Public Library, 2400 Resort St.  For more information about the project,

HISTORIC EUGENE CEMETERY SCHEDULES SEVERAL EVENTS

The Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association will host its annual open house
on May 29-31 with the Hope Abbey Mausoleum open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each
day.

There will be a Veteran’s History Hunt from 1-3 p.m. May 30. It
begins with a map and clues to locate veterans’ graves and to find the
answers to questions about their service to our country. Prizes awarded
to everyone who completes the hunt.  This is a fun and educational
family event for people of all ages

The 7th annual Sacred Harp Sing at Hope Abbey will be at  7:30 p.m.
June 3.  Traditional Sacred Harp shape-note tunes, from the Sacred Harp
hymnal, in four-part harmony will be performed.  All who wish to listen
or participate are welcome.

The cemetery and Hope Abbey Mausoleum are listed in the National
Register of Historic Places.  The site is located at East 25th Avenue
and University Street in Eugene.  All events are free and open to the
