COOS MUSEUM TO BE FEATURED ON TRAVEL CHANNEL

On Nov. 23, the Coos Historical & Maritime Museum will be highlighted
on "Mysteries at the Museum," airing on the Travel Channel.

In March of this year, a film crew from the Travel Channel spent a day
at the museum filming a segment about the museum's World War II Japanese
balloon bomb fragment. Now, nine months later, the show will air. Those
who want to catch this episode can check local listings or the Travel

HERITAGE WALLS EXHIBIT OPENS AT OHS

"Walls of Heritage, Walls of Pride" is an exhibition about African
American murals throughout the United States, with a special focus on
those painted by Portland artists.  It opened last week at the Oregon
Historical Society, 1200 SW Park, Portland,

African Americans have a longstanding, but little-known, mural
tradition. Denied access to mainstream museums and galleries, venues
within the Black community became showcases for images of a people’s
historical struggles and achievements. The exhibit showcases murals from
all over the country with a special emphasis on work by the local
artists.

Highlights include work by two women artists, Charlotte Lewis and
Thelma Johnson Streat. The latter assisted Diego Rivera on one of his
mural projects. Also, getting significant attention for the first time
will be the Albina Mural Project, painted in 1977, in which seven
artists of color, mostly African American, researched regional Black
history and created five 20x20-foot panels that were seen by thousands
of Portlanders at the corner of North Vancouver Avenue and Alberta from
1978-1983.

Video oral histories, archival documents and photos are also included.

HERITAGE PROGRAMS CLOSED TWO DAYS

As part of the unpaid furlough days being taken by state government
employees, the Heritage Programs Division of the Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department will be closed Nov. 26. In addition, the offices
will be closed Nov. 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Heritage Programs Division includes the State Historic Preservation
Office, the Oregon Heritage Commission, the Oregon Commission on
Historic Cemeteries, and the Oregon Historic Trails Advisory Council.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY APPOINTS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Clackamas County Historical Society has made the part-time
appointment of Lisa M. Christopher as executive director. Christopher
will develop short- and long-range plans to fulfill the society's
mission and sustain operations of its facilities. Christopher also is
the principal of at LMChristopher & Associates, a heritage tourism
consulting firm based in Camas, Wash . The society is dedicated to
providing historical information and maintaining two museum buildings
(Museum of the Oregon Territory and the Stevens Crawford House) with
ongoing and special occasion exhibits open to the public on a limited

MULTNOMAH COUNTY SEEKS MEMBERS FOR LEVY OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

Multnomah County voters earlier this month approved a five-year levy to
support the Oregon Historical Society. This funding will enable
restoration of the Oregon History Library and Museum’s hours, as well
as provide free admission for all schoolchildren and residents of
Multnomah County. Part of the accountability built into the measure is
the creation of an independent citizen’s oversight committee charged
with reviewing all levy expenditures to ensure they are used for their
intended purpose. The committee will meet twice annually and will
represent Multnomah County’s diverse communities. Potential committee
members should have a working understanding of budgeting process and a
strong commitment to accountability. Those interested should submit a
resume along with an explanation of qualifications to the Office of

Crook County voters also approved this month a four-year operating levy
for the Bowman Museum in Prineville.
