FALL SPEAKERS SCHEDULED IN BEND, SALEM

Bend: High Desert Museum curator Bob Boyd will lead a 10-week series about how High Desert settlement has changed the region. Participants will examine original artifacts, maps, publications and music of the era. A reading list and discussion of recent publications accompanies each topic that will be presented 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.  Tuesdays beginning Sept. 14. Registration is required by Sept. 10. Salem: Four lunchtime lectures will take place this fall at the Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE. Bill Lang will deliver the initial talk at noon Sept. 22 on "What's Jazz got to do with it? -  Downbeats and Upbeats in 20th Century Oregon Cultural History." His talk will focus on cultural history in the Oregon Encyclopedia, with particular emphasis on how the history of jazz in Portland relates to Oregon culture. He will describe the encyclopedia's approach to history and culture in Oregon, using jazz history to ask fundamental questions about how Oregon changed during the 20th century. Other talks this fall include Jackson B. Miller, "Voters Have Spoken: Oregon's Controversial Ballot Initiatives" on Oct. 13; Bill Sullivan, "Oregon's Greatest Natural Disasters," on Nov. 17; and Virginia Green, "SHINE on Salem 150," on Dec. 1. CULTURAL TRUST SEEKS VOLUNTEER PHOTOGRAPHERS

The Oregon Cultural Trust is looking for photographers to take professional quality photos of cultural events across our vast state.  As a member of the Oregon Culture Volunteer Photo Corps, your photos, taken between now and June 30 will appear on the Oregon Culture flickr page, - and your photos have the potential to appear in Cultural Trust publications and websites with full photo credit.

If you'd like to be considered, upload 4 photo samples (300 dpi or higher) to: http://www.flickr.com [username: culturaltrust at ymail.com, password: oregon2010]. Follow the sample photo for submission instructions. Make sure you include your name in the subject line and a 100 word description of your community as part of the photo description. The priority deadline for review is Sept. 10.

PRESERVATION PLANNING MEETINGS SET IN MEDFORD, BEND

Your are invited to provide input to create a successful plan for collections preservation in Oregon.  Sponsored by many museum, library, and archival organizations, the meetings are designed to bring together archives, libraries and museums to plan a better future for Oregon's heritage collections.

A grant from the federal Institute for Museums and Library Services to the Oregon Museums Association on behalf of archive, library, and museum partners throughout Oregon is making the meetings possible to take stock of preservation, training, and disaster preparedness needs.  From this a statewide preservation plan to address
those needs will be developed.  The plan is a necessary first step to secure funding for future  implementation.

The meetings are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Jackson County Library, 205 S. Central Ave., Medford;  and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Deschutes County Library Administration Building, 507 NW Wall St., Bend. A third meeting will take place later this month at Pendleton.

TAKE THE OREGON HERITAGE VITALITY SURVEY NOW

Join dozens of other Oregonians who have participated in the new Oregon Heritage Vitality survey that seeks your views on potential solutions to the challenges faced by  the Oregon heritage community.

The online survey about the solutions is the next-to-last stage of an Oregon Heritage Vitality Assessment by the Oregon Heritage Commission. The final stage will be adoption of the assessment and recommended solutions by the Heritage Commission later this fall.

Last fall, the Heritage Commission initiated an assessment of the challenges being faced by heritage in Oregon. The assessment included an initial survey, individual interviews, forums and data gathering.

This survey asks individuals for their views about eight issues and solutions for each. The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete. Please complete this survey now at

MARITIME CENTER TO OPEN THIS WEEKEND

The Pacific Maritime and Heritage Center, 333 SE Bay Blvd., Newport, will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 11-12.. Several maritime-related  displays, including an exhibit of photographs by Jim Haron and Roger Hart, will be featured.
