BEND, VALE TO PRESENT BOOK AUTHORS,

Bend:  The Des Chutes Historical Museum will host Gregory Nokes at 1
p.m. Sept. 25 when he discusses his book "Massacred for Gold." The book
focuses on the 1887 killings of more than 30 Chinese gold miners on the
Oregon side of Hells Canyon, and community actions related to them. The
Des Chutes Historical Museum is located at 129 NW Idaho Ave, between

Vale: A book “The Treasures of Malheur:  A GPS Guide to Historic
Malheur County,” will be the focus of a presentation by its creators
LeRoy Cammack and Gary Fugate at 3 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Rinehart Stone
House Museum, 255 Main St..  They will talk about the project, how it
came about, how long it took to finish and the rewards of acknowledging
the history of Malheur County. The publication lists 101 sites with a
GPS coordinate, a photograph or illustration of the each site, and a
description of the historical significance. For more information contact

PROPOSALS SOUGHT FOR HERITAGE CONFERENCE PROGRAM

People interested in making presentations at the 2011 Oregon Heritage
Conference should make their proposals by Sept. 30. 

Proposed presentations, sessions and activities should relate to the
conference theme of “A Blockbuster Community: Heritage, Authenticity
and Vision.” The theme recognizes the history of the host community,
Astoria, and highlights the towns and cities that are using heritage,
authenticity and vision to make communities appealing to residents and
visitors alike. Heritage leaders from communities in Oregon and
southwest Washington attending the conference will learn about resources
and techniques for improving their operations and organizations, as well
as helping their towns and cities flourish.

Oregon Heritage Conferences inform and inspire Oregonians involved in
the state’s cultural heritage efforts. Attendees include community
leaders, staff and volunteers from historical societies, museums,
historic cemeteries, ethnic organizations, schools, historic
preservation commissions, humanities groups, Main Street programs, the
tourism industry, economic development, history buffs and professional
historians, archaeologists, youth, and local, tribal, state and federal
governments. The 2011 conference is scheduled April 7-9.

EXHIBITS OPENING IN GOVERNMENT CAMP, NEWPORT

Government Camp:  “Mount Hood: The Photographic Subject” showcases
black-and-white photography of the Mount Hood area from the early 20th
century, with an emphasis on works from the Hal Lidell collection. These
photographs document the history of Mount Hood, including changes in
recreation and increasing development. This exhibit is designed to
introduce visitors to the Lidell collection and celebrate the completion
of the Mt. Hood Photographic Legacy Project, which digitized and
preserved the Lidell negative collection. The exhibit will be at the Mt.
Hood Cultural Center and Museum, 88900 E. Hwy 26, from Sept. 18-Jan. 15.

Newport:  The exhibit "Rough Waters: Shipwrecks on Oregon's Coast" will
open Oct. 2 at the Lincoln County Historical Society. Among the items in
the exhibit are an 1887 photo of a wreck on Yaquina Bay and a painting
of the "New Carissa.  Dennis Powers, author of "Tales of the Seven Seas:
The Escapades of Captain Dynamite Johnny Obrien" will speak at the
opening at 2 p.m. For more information, call the Historical Society at
541-265-7509. The Lincoln County Historical Society, which includes the
Burrows House and Log Cabin museums, is located at 545 SW Ninth St. The
museums are free and open to the public. 

FAMILY EVENTS SLATED FOR SATURDAYS IN SALEM

Free monthly family events at the Willamette Heritage Center, 1313 Mill
St. SE, will begin Sept. 11 with "Farmer in the Mill," an opportunity to
learn about sheep, wool and how it is turned into clothing. Other
programs in the series include "Archaeology Rocks" on Oct. 9, "Weather
Works" on Nov. 13, and "Christmas Pasts and Presents" on Dec. 11. Each
of the events takes place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information,

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN EUGENE, OREGON CITY

Eugene:  Historic Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House seeks a half-time
executive house director with experience, communication skills and word
processing skills to plan, manage, direct, coordinate activities and

Oregon City: The City of Oregon City’s Historic Review Board is
seeking the services of a qualified consultant to conduct a
reconnaissance level re-survey of locally designated landmarks and an
intensive level survey of selected properties. Copies of the request for

Oregon City Community Development Offices, 221 Molalla Ave., or on the

CALENDAR DEADLINE SEPT. 17 FOR DAYS OF CULTURE

Oregon Days of Culture Oct. 1-8 will celebrate the role of heritage,
humanities and the arts in daily life. Heritage organizations around the
state are invited by the Oregon Cultural Trust to post their activities
for the week on a statewide calendar. However, the deadline for
