DEADLINE TOMORROW FOR CEMETERIES COMMISSION MEMBER APPLICATION
 
The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries is seeking a volunteer to
fill one open position. It will accept applications until tomorrow, Dec.
6. The commission is particularly seeking a representative from the
central or north areas of the East side of the state, but all are
encouraged to apply. 
 
The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries is comprised of seven
citizens and is empowered by the legislature to develop and maintain a
listing of all pioneer and historic cemeteries in Oregon. The commission
makes recommendations for funding, obtains grants funding, seeks
legislative appropriations for historic cemeteries, and assists in the
coordination of restoration, renovation and maintenance of historic
cemeteries statewide.
 
The group meets four times per year in changing locations around the
state. There may be an occasional additional meeting for extra projects,
programs and grant selection. Commissioners also provide informal
meetings in their regions and work on other projects outside of meeting
time.
 
The state historic cemeteries program, a part of Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department, maintains a list of Oregon’s historic cemeteries
and offers a variety of educational, financial and technical resources
for those working to preserve them. Details are available online at

PRESERVING OREGON’S ALDERBROOK STATION ON EXCHANGE
 
Alderbrook Station, the last intact netshed on the lower Columbia
River, received a Preserving Oregon Grant a year ago. Read about the

STATE LIBRARY DIGITIZES HISTORICAL OREGON NATIONAL GUARD NEWSLETTERS
 
The Oregon State Library has digitized a historical run of the
newsletters published by the Oregon National Guard. The project covers
all issues of the different newsletters the Guard published contained in
the State Library’s collections. The permanent collection consists of
both digital and paper copies of the newsletters.
 
The Guard first published the “Oregon Guardsman” on April 30, 1921. The
slogan on the masthead of the first issue describes the purpose of the
newsletter: "Authentic Information of the Oregon National Guard." Issues
average 4-8 pages. The newsletters contain news about activities and
deployment of Guard units across Oregon; budgetary and statistical
information about the Guard, promotions in rank of Guard members, and
photographs.

AASLH LAUNCHES HOME FOR HISTORY WEBSITE
 
AASLH recently launched its new website: Home for History. The site
offers an exciting and innovative way for history professionals to
engage and learn about the field. In addition to finding traditional
information about the services and programs AASLH offers, the Home for
History website offers fresh content from the field, a place to locate
resources and tools, and creates an online place for history
professionals to engage and network. 
 
Home for History also includes the StEPs Clearinghouse, which responds
to the call for an online site to help history organizations find
high-quality resources, training opportunities and other tools. Made
possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the
Clearinghouse offers a myriad of solutions from sample bylaws or social
media policies to the latest thoughts about storytelling in exhibitions
and tips for recruiting volunteers.
