OREGON ARCHAEOLOGY KICKS OFF 20TH CELEBRATION
 
The 20th year of the Oregon Archaeology Celebration is in full swing!
This annual event provides learning experiences for everyone. Statewide
events will take place all month long, and will include lectures by
renowned speakers, interpretative hikes and family archaeology. View and

 GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR VETERANS AND WAR MEMORIALS 
 
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is offering grants for the
construction or restoration of veterans and war memorials. The program
helps to honor Oregon’s soldiers and veterans by commemorating their
service to the country.  Details and the application information (

online. The application deadline is November 8.

ASTORIA TO HOST GHADAR PARTY 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
 
Astoria will host a celebration on Oct. 4 and 5 to commemorate the
100-year anniversary of the founding meeting of the Ghadar Party, which
took place in the local Finnish Socialist Hall during May 1913. That
Astoria was the birthplace of such a significant political movement was
largely unknown until an article written by Johanna Ogden appeared in
the summer 2012 issue of the “Oregon Historical Quarterly”. 
 
The revolutionary nationalist Ghadar Party represented "an
uncompromising and radical new direction in Indian nationalist
politics," according Ogden. "Created by the Asian Indians of the U.S.
West Coast, Ghadar's aim was nothing less than the armed overthrow of
British rule in India. The group included intellectuals such as (Har)
Dyal as well as students, but its ranks were the laboring Punjabi men
who worked the (Columbia River) region's mills and farms. Men from the
length of the Columbia River and beyond filled the hall that May in
Astoria. Within a year of the meeting, hundreds of Punjabis,
overwhelmingly laborers from the West Coast led by Sohan Singh Bhakna
from Portland, returned to India with the hope of sparking an
insurrection against British rule. Most were promptly captured,
detained, tried or executed."  
 
The article sparked interest among historians and scholars, and
resulted in a public speaking engagement in Portland, attended by more
than 300 people. Astoria's City Council later issued an official
proclamation and plans swiftly went into motion for a two-day event to
support a commemoration of the Ghadar Party's founding meeting,
embracing the opportunity to bring another piece of the city's immigrant
history to light. The two-day event will include film screenings, a
panel discussion, a walking tour and other commemorative activities.
