FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS STUDYING OREGON HERITAGE

Oregon Heritage will award up to three $2,000 fellowships to full-time
students of an Oregon university or college for researching, writing,
and presenting a paper on a topic related to history, geography,
archaeology, cultural heritage, or historic preservation in Oregon. The

HISTORIC COLUMBIA RIVER HIGHWAY STATE TRAIL DEDICATION SET FOR SEPT.

The Oregon Department of Transportation and Oregon Parks and Recreation
Department will dedicate the newest segment of the Historic Columbia
River Highway State Trail at 11 a.m., Sept. 14 the new McCord Creek
Bridge near the John B. Yeon Trailhead as part of the 100-year
celebration of the design and construction of the Columbia River
Highway. The 1.6-mile trail connection, from Yeon State Park to Moffett
Creek, allows cyclists to ride from Troutdale to Cascade Locks without
having to use the shoulder of Interstate 84. For further information,

OREGON HUMANITIES TO HOST GRANT WRITING WEBINAR OCT. 3

Oregon Humanities will hold a webinar on writing strong letters of
interest for Public Program Grants from 11 a.m. – noon, Oct. 3. Visit

ORAL HISTORY WORKSHOPS TO TAKE PLACE IN TILLAMOOK COUNTY

Trav Williams, of the Northwest Oral History Association, is developing
oral history workshops relating to rural coastal Oregon. Beginning in
September and continuing through October, a small group of locals will
be meeting in Manzanita to learn about and review classic oral history
techniques, legal needs, and brainstorming tactics, with the intent to
develop active collection projects in Tillamook County. The Nehalem
Valley Historical Society ( http://nehalemvalleyhistory.org/ ) will host

OHS LAUNCHES COLLECTIONS BLOG ON TUMBLR

The Research Library at the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) has
launched a blog on Tumblr. Curated by library staff, the blog allows the
public to peek at the unique and varied collections at OHS. Visit the

BEST PRACTICES FOR MURAL CREATION, PRESERVATION NOW AVAILABLE

While working to ensure the protection and preservation of existing
murals, Heritage Preservation’s Rescue Public Murals (RPM) initiative
recognized that with careful planning and preparation mural owners /
creators can mitigate common issues of long-term care. RPM held
conversations and brainstorming sessions with muralists, conservators,
art historians, arts administrators, materials scientists, and engineers
to document best practices for mural creation. Their findings are now
available on a website that cover best practice for mural creation (
http://www.heritagepreservation.org/RPM/MuralBestPractices ) is the
result of their efforts, and includes recommendations for each stage of
mural creation: planning wall selection, wall and surface preparation,
painting, coating, and maintenance.

SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS TO MEET IN SALEM, OCT. 18-20

The Marion Dan Ross Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians
will meet for its annual conference Oct. 18 – 20 in Salem with the theme
“The Willamette River Valley: Settlers and Founders.” Papers, panels and
tours will feature presentations by Don Peting, Roger Roper, Kirk
Ranzetta, Liz Carter, Leland Roth, Elisabeth Potter, Brandon
Spencer-Hartle, and Chris Bell, among others.  Tours will include
Geercrest Farm, Willamette Heritage Center, the Capital Mall, Willamette
University, Oregon State Hospital, Deepwood Estate, and downtown Salem.
