ASK SANTA FOR OREGON HERITAGE MENTORCORPS EMERGENCY BACKPACK ITEMS

Oregon Heritage MentorCorps members each have a red backpack filled with items heritage organizations should have on hand for emergencies. When you’re making your list for Santa, you should ask for pack filled with these items! In fact, Santa might want to add some of these items to his own bag in case of an emergency during his ‘round the world travels!

You will want to ask Santa for a handheld LED flashlight, a headlamp for hands-free observation, and batteries to operate both. You should add to that list a high visibility safety vest, a respirator mask, and a covered clipboard that holds paper, writing tools, and a “Field Guide to Emergency Response”, which includes an instructional DVD, produced by Heritage Preservation. You might also ask for a handy disaster response reference tool known as an Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel (Santa can find one for you by calling (888) 388-6789 or visiting www.heritageemergency.org<http://www.heritageemergency.org>). While you’re writing that list, add a first aid kit, latex or other protective gloves, safety glasses and hardhat. Don’t forget a hand-crank-powered radio, a brightly colored backpack to contain and carry all your gear and a carabineer to clip on the outside!

OREGON HERITAGE IS CELEBRATING ITS FRIENDS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

DON’T FORGET TO SUBMIT A NOMINATION FOR OREGON HERITAGE EXCELLENCE

The Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards recognize individuals, businesses and organizations for outstanding efforts on behalf of Oregon heritage and raise the quality of heritage-oriented activities. Oregon Heritage encourages nominations of organizations and projects of all sizes and heritage purposes, as well as volunteers and professionals from all heritage sectors. DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR OTE MAYNARD C. DRAWSON MEMORIAL AWARD

Oregon Travel Experience (OTE) and the Oregon Heritage Tree Program recently established a new statewide award in Maynard “The Tree Man” Drawson’s name. The deadline for submitting nominations is Jan. 30. The annual award will honor individuals (or groups) who have championed Oregon’s trees with the same fervor and success as Drawson.

Considered the founder of Oregon’s official statewide heritage tree program, Drawson’s affection for trees resulted in many big tree nominations for acceptance to the National Big Tree Registry and the preservation of the “Valley of Giants”, a wonderful lasting reminder of the old growth timber that once graced the Oregon Coast Range.

DIGITAL NEWSPAPER PROJECT TO ADD MORE TITLES

The University of Oregon Libraries’ Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP) will add images of more than 16 historic Oregon newspapers during the final year of its grant funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ and Library of Congress’ National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

There are currently more than 650,000 pages of 65 historic Oregon newspapers (most published before 1923) on the website. Digitization is now underway on ten newspapers from locations in every corner of the state, with additional digitization of others, including Astoria’s Toveritar (a Finnish language paper edited by women), the Condon Globe, Dallas’ Oregon Republican / Liberal Republican, the Echo Register, the Junction City Bulletin and the Athena Press.

Keyword-searchable content from these newspapers is available at Historic Oregon Newspapers<http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/> and at Library of Congress' Chronicling America website<http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/>.
