HOME GARDEN OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PIONEERS LISTING IN NATIONAL REGISTER

The State Historic Preservation Office recently announced the individual listing of the residence and personal garden of early landscape architects Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver in the National Register of Historic Places. The two women founded the first woman-owned landscape architecture firm in the Pacific Northwest. They designed and created the garden, naming it Gaiety Hollow.

Lord and Schryver established the firm in 1929, at a time when very few landscape architects in Oregon sustained a private practice, which they did for 40 years. Theirs was a varied practice, encompassing everything from gardens to large civic projects. In 1932, they moved to the site where architect Clarence Smith designed new offices and living quarters for them. Designing the “home garden” enabled Lord and Schryver to both showcase their work and experiment with new design ideas and planting schemes.

“It is perhaps the best example of their life’s work, a place where they could play out their design principles freely, unfettered by clients’ wishes,” said Bobbie Dolp, president of the Lord and Schryver Conservancy, which has spent 15 years reinvigorating the history and gardens of Lord and Schryver. “The garden draws on classical garden design traditions but also has a distinctive Pacific Northwest flair, showcasing plants suited to the region.”

Named as a contributing resource to the Gaiety Hill / Bush’s Pasture Park Historic District, considerable research during the past decade by the Lord and Schryver Conservancy added new importance to the site. The conservancy group is using the site as an educational center and is raising funds to purchase it.

The National Park Service maintains the National Register under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. INSTITUTE FOR STRATEGIC FUNDING DEVELOPMENT OFFERS FEBRUARY WORKSHOP AT PSU

The Institute for Strategic Funding Development will offer a two-day strategic grant writing development workshop from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Feb. 2 – 3, at Portland State University,  1825 SW Broadway, Portland.

Attendees will learn proven strategies to develop winning proposals. Subjects covered include information about writing persuasive proposals, identifying relevant government, foundation, and corporate funding sources, and establishing an efficient pre-proposal planning process. The workshop also touches on developing and organizing results-oriented proposal ideas, preparing and writing content to meet proposal guidelines effectively and managing and streamlining submission procedures and follow-up.

Each participant will receive an * ISFD Certificate of Completion accredited by CFRE with 15 Continuation Education Units (CEU), a Strategic Grant Writing Development Proposal Workbook and bonus materials, including a fundraising and research CD, and on-going consulting services with ISFD instructors and staff.
