STATE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION TO MEET IN FOREST GROVE

Oregon’s State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (SACHP) will consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places in a two-day meeting at McMenamins Grand Lodge, 3505 Pacific Ave., Forest Grove. The public meeting will begin at 2 p.m. on Feb. 20 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 21.

The Committee will review proposed nominations for properties in Scappoose, Klamath Falls, Paisley, and Newberg. PRESERVATION ASSISTANCE GRANTS AVAILABLE TO SMALL INSTITUTIONS FROM NEH

Preservation Assistance Grants are now available to small institutions from National Endowment for the Humanities. The program’s focus is to promote preservation planning and preservation activities within the country’s smaller libraries, archives, museums, and historical organizations. The application deadline is May 1.

Grant activities supported include preservation needs assessment for analog and digital collections; consultations with preservation professionals to develop a plan to address a specific preservation problem, including digital preservation issue; and attendance at preservation workshops including training in best practices for digitization projects. Grant applicants can also seek support for the purchase of storage furniture and preservation supplies; and purchase of environmental monitoring equipment.

TRAVEL OREGON ACCEPTING 2014/2015 GRANT APPLICATIONS

Travel Oregon is now accepting applications for its 2014/2015 Matching Grants Program. The program makes awards to eligible applicants for projects that contribute to the development and improvement of local communities throughout the state in support of Travel Oregon’s mission of "a better life for Oregonians through strong, sustainable local economies." Applications should be aware of several processing deadlines.

An applicant may apply for one grant per cycle and must match the amount of the awarded grant dollar-for-dollar. Up to 50 percent of the match may be in-kind. Cities, counties, port districts, federally recognized Tribes and non-profit entities in Oregon involved with tourism promotion and development are eligible to apply. Projects should target the development of tourism infrastructure or strategic collaborative marketing initiatives that align with local, regional or statewide efforts and increase the likelihood of visitation from outside the local area. Partnerships with local, regional and statewide tourism organizations, economic development and/or government organizations and tourism-related businesses are encouraged.

NATIONAL PRESERVATION INSTITUTE SETS APRIL SEMINARS IN PORTLAND

The National Preservation Institute (NPI) has published its upcoming seminar schedule<http://www.npi.org/taxonomy/term/5> online. Seminars offered in Portland this spring include Cultural and Natural Resources: An Integrated management Strategy (April 8 – 9) and Renewable Energy Development: Impacts on Cultural Resources (April 10). The seminars are a cooperative effort between the Oregon Department of Transportation and the State Historic Preservation Office. Advanced registration is available through Feb. 27. CULTURAL TRUST AND ARTS COMMISSION SEEK INPUT ON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SURVEY

As the state of Oregon prepares to launch a national search for the next executive director to lead the Oregon Arts Commission and the Oregon Cultural Trust, it is seeking insights and perspective that will help to shape the attributes of the position. ROGUE RIVER WAR, OREGON TERRITORY SUBJECT OF MARCH 4 LECTURE IN PORTLAND
“Rogue River War Archaeology and the Establishment of the Oregon Territory” is the title of a lecture sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological Society and presented by Dr. Mark Tveskov beginning at 7:45 p.m., March 4 at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, 1945 SE Water Ave, Portland.

Tveskov will describe recent archaeological research findings at several important sites in the Rogue Valley that shed light on the role of the Federal Government in the early settlement of the Oregon Territory. Important archaeological sites include Camp Castaway on the North Spit of Coos Bay; the Battle of Hungry Hill site (October 1855), and Fort Lane near Jacksonville. HIGH DESERT MUSEUM NAMES DANA WHITELAW AS ITS NEW PRESIDENT

The High Desert Museum in Bend has a new leader. The board of trustees appointed Dr. Dana Whitelaw, formerly VP of Programs as the museum’s new president.

“We had so many high-quality candidates … museum professionals from all across the country who wanted to lead this organization,” Board Chair David Souther said. “We chose Dr. Whitelaw for her passion, her track record of success and her intimate knowledge of the operation. The selection process was very thorough, and we are completely confident that Dana Whitelaw was the right choice.”

“I’m very grateful that the board has given me this opportunity to lead,” Whitelaw said. “The organization is in a very solid place right now, and with such a talented team of people here… I’m really looking forward to taking the next steps at the Museum.”
