COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS LEAD TO COLLECTIONS’ PRESERVATION, ACCESS SOLUTIONS

Museums and archives find it challenging to balance between public access and preservation. Long-term preservation concerns often lead to restrictive public access policies and the loss of life-enriching opportunities. NEW HERITAGE BULLETIN DISCUSSES DIGITAL STEWARDSHIP, CURATION

Oregon Heritage has released Heritage Bulletin 23: “Digital Stewardship and Curation”. This new Bulletin explores the meaning of digital curation and stewardship. It also provides tips for dealing with the effects of rapid changes in technology on digital collections and their long-term sustainability. DIGITAL COLLECTION WEBINAR SET FOR MARCH 25

The Connecting to Collections Online Community will hold a “Digital Collections: A Future for Small Museums” webinar at 10 a.m., March 25. This is an opportunity to learn about digital collections and a few ways to create them. Amanda Shepp will review the process creating a digital museum and present ideas for small organizations. HISTORIC HIGHWAY ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO MEET IN THE DALLES

The Historic Columbia River Highway Advisory Committee will meet from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., March 25 at the Gorge Discovery Center, 5000 Discover Dr., The Dalles. The meeting agenda includes discussion about the Historic Highway State Trail – Wyeth to Starvation Creek Visual Resource Assessment and design elements; an update on the “Hub” planning in the Gorge; and 2016 Celebration. NEH PRESERVATION ASSISTANCE GRANTS FOR SMALLER INSTITUTIONS SEEKING REVIEWERS

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation and Access is seeking knowledgeable individuals willing to evaluate applications for Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions. Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-size institutions – such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges – improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections.

If you are an academic museum professional (curator, collections manager, conservator, or administrator) who is interested in joining the roster of potential reviewers, e-mail preservation at neh.gov<mailto:preservation at neh.gov> by April 25. NEH will form panels in early May and will contact interested parties before the end of that month if they match the proposals received.

Panel service involves reading approximately 20 five-page applications and the submission (via the NEH web site) of written comments and ratings for each application. This work will take place during June, with comments due by mid-July. Panelists will receive an honorarium for their service. SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS SEEK PAPERS FOR 2014 CONFERENCE

The Marion Dean Ross/Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH MDR) is seeking papers for its 2014 annual conference, set to take place in Seattle, October 3 – 5. This year's theme is "Museums: Building Collections, Building Community”. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Marion Dean Ross / Pacific Northwest Chapter.

Paper abstracts are due May 31. Those with selected submissions will receive notification by June 11. Completed manuscripts are due August 12 for presentation at the conference. For conference updates and further information visit the SAH MDR website<http://www.sahmdr.org/>.

SHPO SEEKS PRESERVATION SPECIALIST; RECRUITMENT CLOSES MARCH 25

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is seeking a Preservation Specialist for the Salem office. Click on the attached link and follow to “Program Analyst 1 – Preservation Specialist.” Recruitment closes on March 25.

The successful applicant will provide assistance to the Special Assessment tax benefit program for historic properties in Oregon and the Federal Tax benefit program; provide assistance to the Review and Compliance program; and provide assistance to the Archaeological Services program under the direction of archaeological staff.

Qualified applicants will possess a Bachelor's Degree in business or public administration, behavioral or social sciences, or a related degree; or any combination of experience or education equivalent to three years technical-level experience with professional-level evaluative, analytical and planning work.
