OPRD SEEKS NEW VETERANS AND WAR MEMORIAL GRANT REVIEW COMMITTEE MEMBER

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is seeking a volunteer to fill one open position on the committee that reviews applications for the Veterans and War Memorial Grant Program. The department is currently seeking a member who represents a veterans’ organization. The term of service is four years.

The Veterans and War Memorials Grant Program honors Oregon’s soldiers and veterans by commemorating their service to the country. The Program provides funding to local governments for the construction and restoration of veterans’ and war memorials.  The OPRD Local Government Grant Advisory Committee and two other people who represent either a veterans’ organization or a government agency responsible for the administration of law relating to veterans review the applications. The next grant review will take place this summer.

DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR OREGON HERITAGE PRESERVATION SCHOLARSHIP

There is still time to apply for an Oregon Heritage Preservation Scholarship, which provides financial assistance for Oregon residents to attend a preservation-related conference, workshop, or training in the United States between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Eligible travel expenses include registration fees, transportation, lodging and meals. The application deadline is June 6. NATIONAL TRUST PRESERVATION FUNDS APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 2

Applications for the National Trust Preservation Funds are due June 2. Grants from the Funds encourage preservation at the local level by providing seed money for planning and education projects. Grants range up to $5,000 and require a dollar-for-dollar match. Organizations are eligible to receive up to three grants in a two-year period, with the understanding that each project phase is eligible for only one grant. CLATSOP COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESERVATION FIELD SCHOOL SET FOR JUNE IN ASTORIA

Clatsop Community College will offer its Historic Preservation Field School from June 16 to 19, 2014 in Astoria.  The Field School will consist of a series of hands-on workshops, visits to regional sites of historic significance, walking tours of historic Astoria, a boat tour of Astoria’s Columbia River waterfront, and other opportunities to investigate local history and preservation activities. Presented through the college’s award-winning Historic Preservation and Restoration Program, the summer Field School offers attendees the twofold opportunity of developing unique historic preservation skills while soaking up the atmosphere of the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.

This four-day hands-on Field School introduces participants to the basic concepts of historic preservation.  Students will earn two college credits and engage in the crafts of historic buildings, including woodworking, blacksmithing, stained glass design and repair, and repair and weatherization of historic windows.

EAGLE CAP EXCURSION TRAIN SETS FAMILY FUN DAY, JUNE 14 IN ELGIN

The Eagle Cap Excursion Train, based out of the Elgin Depot, will conduct a Family Fun Day on June 14. Created as part of an economic development effort, the train offers families and younger passengers a shorter one-way train ride from Elgin to Minam, with a bus ride back to the Elgin depot. The Wallowa and Union County governments formed a partnership and rescued the historic Joseph Branch, now known as the Wallowa Union Railroad, from salvage in 2003. The Friends of the Joseph Branch is a non-profit organization that assists the railroad by operating the excursion train, hosting passengers, restoring the rail cars and preserving the history of the railroad.

"We created this ride because we want to give kids the opportunity to ride a train," said Ed Spaulding, President of the Friends of the Joseph Branch, the non-profit organization that manages the excursion business and the depot for the Wallowa Union Railroad. "Many young people have never experienced the fun of riding the rails. This trip should be a hit with visiting and resident families in our area who are looking for fun things to do during summer vacation." Spaulding noted this trip also marks the train's return to Minam for the first time since 2012.

The train operates on a roadless stretch of track that follows the Grande Ronde River downstream from Elgin, crosses the bridge at Rondowa, then goes up the Wallowa River to Minam. Passengers are free to walk through the train in transit and enjoy the view from the open vestibules or the half-screened bay doors in the baggage car.

COMMITTEE FORUMS TO MEET CULTURAL TRUST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FINALISTS

The search committee has identified finalists for the position of executive director of the Oregon Arts Commission / Oregon Cultural Trust. The Committee invites the public to meet the finalists at community forums that will take place on June 2 in Salem and Portland, and encourages feedback about the candidates. The Portland forum will run from 10 a.m. to noon in the Oregon Historical Society Pavilion, 1200 SW Park Ave.  The Salem forum will run from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the State Lands Board Room, 775 Summer St. NE.

OREGON PARKS AND RECREATION SEEKS A HERITAGE OUTREACH SPECIALIST

Oregon Heritage, a division of Oregon parks and Recreation, is seeking a Heritage Outreach Specialist to assist local history and heritage organizations with their programs and projects as part of the Heritage Outreach team and the overall Heritage Programs Division. As part of the team, this position will help plan, coordinate, and conduct public education activities, including training sessions, workshops, and conferences, as well as produce publications, news releases, listserve and website content. WESTERN OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY SEEKS ASSISTANT PROF. OF PUBLIC HISTORY

The history department at Western Oregon University (WOU) is seeking a non-tenure track visiting Assistant Professor in Public History with an emphasis on environmental history in the American West. The position begins Sept. 16 and will be a full-time appointment for Fall 2014, Winter 2015 and Spring 2015.

The department has a robust undergraduate program. Faculty members participate in a variety of interdisciplinary minors across campus including an Environmental Studies minor. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. with college level teaching experience, including the U.S. History survey sequence and upper-division courses in the fields outlined above, including a course in Archival Science and at least one graduate level course. The candidate will also assist history majors who are completing their senior thesis in these fields. We seek someone who will cultivate links to community and governmental institutions in the region.
