TEN REASONS WE’RE THANKFUL

STATE CEMETERIES COMMISSION RECEIVES TWO NEW MEMBERS, SEEKS ANOTHER

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Director Lisa VanLaanen recently appointed Jeanean Craig of Silverton and Charlotte Lehan of Wilsonville to the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries. The commission is seeking a representative from the northeast part of the state.

Appointed in the spring, Craig, a lawyer, is interested in the historical records and legal issues related to Oregon’s historic cemeteries. Lehan, appointed this fall, has worked with several historic cemeteries. She is familiar with burial documentation, genealogy and other cemetery issues.

“The commission is pleased to welcome both Craig and Lehan, both of whom are looking forward to supporting people and organizations taking care of historic cemeteries,” said program coordinator Kuri Gill. “Both will be great additions to the commission.”

The seven-member Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries supports OPRD historic cemetery preservation efforts by offering training, educational resources, coordination and grants. Its other members are Diane Elder of Paisley, Trey Batey of Medford, Mike Leamy of Astoria and Eirik Thorsgard of Grand Ronde. CULTURAL TRUST RELEASES VOICE OF CULTURE VIDEOS

The Cultural Trust recently released Voices of Oregon Culture<Voices%20of%20Oregon%20Culture>, a video series that showcases the life-changing work of Oregon’s cultural nonprofits. For example, Lloyd Percy is a preservation superstar in the city of Echo. In his short video,<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ti_P0eAYLM&feature=youtu.be> he shares his thoughts on the importance of historic preservation and community vitality.

Heritage organizations can incorporate the videos as part of end of year campaigns, by sharing them on websites, social media networks, etc. This is a great way to celebrate what we do! Remember to remind your supporters that when they donate funds to your organization, they can make a matching contribution to the Oregon Cultural Trust and become eligible for a credit on their Oregon tax return next spring! PARTNERS SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON RAIL WITH TRAIL PROJECT STUDY

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) and Eastern Oregon University (EOU) are seeking participation in a project to study the possibility of locating a public trail adjacent to the historic Joseph Branch railroad line, which is still in operation. The Wallowa Union Railroad Authority (WURA), owner and operator of the rail corridor, has requested this planning process.

During the Rail with Trail Study, EOU is contributing project management services and OPRD is providing trail-planning assistance. Once input is gathered, a report will be prepared and presented to WURA for their consideration of the “rail with trail” concept.

During this phase, the project partners are completing an existing conditions assessment of the rail corridor. Work includes an assessment of existing facilities and services, land use analysis and stakeholder interviews.

Study findings will be available for review by community members to identify opportunities and constraints associated with the trail concept. Public workshops will take place from 6 – 8:30 p.m., on Dec. 2 at the City of Elgin Community Center; Dec. 3 at the City of Wallowa Senior Center; and Dec. 4 at the City of Enterprise Senior Center.

NATIONAL COUNCIL ON PUBLIC HISTORY SEEKING AWARD NOMINATIONS

National Council on Public History (NCPH) is seeking nominations for its Public History Award, which recognizes excellence in the diverse ways public historians apply their skills to the world around us. The award program promotes professionalism and best practices among public historians and raises awareness about their activities. Recipients will receive recognition during the NCPH annual meeting, April 15-18, 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. The deadline is December 1.

Award categories include Excellence in Consulting Award for outstanding work and contributions by consultants or contractors and the Outstanding Public History Project Award, for a project that contributes to a broader public reflection and appreciation of the past or that serves as a model of professional public history practice. The Michael C. Robinson Prize for Historical Analysis recognizes historical studies that contribute directly to the formation of public policy and the New Professional Award bestows travel grants to encourage new professionals, practicing public history for no more than three years, to attend the 2015 Annual Meeting. The Student Project Award provides a travel grant to attend the 2015 Annual Meeting and recognizes the contributions of student work to the field of public history and the Graduate Student Travel Award provides travel grants for graduate students presenting (session, poster session, or working group) at the 2015 Annual Meeting.
