FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS STUDYING OREGON HERITAGE

Oregon Heritage will award up to three $2,000 fellowships to full-time students of an Oregon university or college for researching, writing and presenting a topic related to history, geography, archaeology, cultural heritage, or historic preservation in Oregon.

SHARE YOUR SNAPSHOT OF OREGON CULTURE

The Cultural Trust recently launched its 2014 Days of Culture campaign<http://www.culturaltrust.org/blog/show-us-your-oregon-culture>, which includes an invitation for the public to post snapshots on social media Oct. 1-8 that illustrate your cultural experiences -- anything from a good meal or a concert experience to a backwoods hike or a family event. The possibilities are endless as culture is all about who we are, what we do and how we experience life! To participate, capture a cultural moment and post it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #thisisculture. The goal is to digitally showcase a range of cultural experiences from around the state.

Traditionally, Days of Culture commemorates the Oct. 8 anniversary of the Cultural Trust with a weeklong celebration of events and activities presented by Oregon’s 1,300 cultural organizations, coalitions and tribes, Days of Culture The decision to expand the 2014 celebration to feature individual experiences came from a desire to demonstrate how interwoven our culture is with everyday life. Days of Culture also launches the Trust’s fundraising season. Those who gave or give a 2014 donation to one of Oregon’s designated 1,300 cultural nonprofits<http://www.culturaltrust.org/node/11> are eligible for a tax credit if they make a matching gift to the Cultural Trust.

NISA TO TEACH TRADITIONAL STORYTELLING AT FESTIVAL OCT. 8 – 12 IN PORTLAND

The Northwest Indian Storytelling Association (NISA) will present its ninth season of traditional Pacific Northwest tribal storytelling beginning at 7 p.m., Oct. 8 and continuing through Oct. 12, at Portland State University's Native American Student and Community Center on the corner of SW Broadway and Jackson Streets (south side of PSU's campus) in Portland. Attendees will learn the art of traditional storytelling from generations of tribal members. If you are Native American or self-identify as Native, you can participate in NISA's Emerging Tribal Storytellers Workshop on Oct. 11 – 12, Scholarships are still available. NISA was formed in 2005 to encourage, preserve and strengthen traditional storytelling among tribes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and to share tribal oral cultural arts with the entire regional community. ARCHIVES CRAWL TO FEATURE ARCHIVES, LIBRARIES, MUSEUMS OCT. 18

The annual Archives Crawl will take place from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Oct. 18. Crawlers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities at each location (the Portland Archives and Records Center<http://www.portlandonline.com/auditor/?c=26978> (PARC), the Multnomah County Central Library<https://multcolib.org/> and the Oregon Historical Society<http://www.ohs.org/>) including a behind the scenes look at collections, listening to speakers discuss archival resources; and networking with archivists who manage some of the most exciting and diverse historical collections in Oregon. The Crawl can begin at any of the above locations.

OMA CONFERENCE SET TO TAKE PLACE OCT. 26 – 28 IN PORTLAND

The Oregon Museums Association’s Annual Conference will take place Oct. 26 – 28 in Portland. The registration deadline is Oct. 6. This year’s theme is “Connecting and Collaborating: Inspiring Museums for New Generations” Keynote speakers include Aili Schreiner, Oregon Cultural Trust manager and Eliza Canty-Jones, “Oregon Historical Quarterly” editor and public outreach manager at the Oregon Historical Society. STATE LIBRARY OFFERS UPDATED RESEARCH HOURS FOR PATRONS

Effective Oct. 2 (today), the State Library will open access to its collections to members of the public Mon. – Fri., from 1 – 4 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to search the Library’s catalog<http://catalog.osl.state.or.us/screens/opacmenu_s2.html>, call, email, or chat with library staff to confirm availability of materials before making the trip to the library. NPS LAUNCHES HISTORY OF STANDARDS WEBPAGE

The Technical Preservation Services (TPS ) branch of the National Park Service recently launched a new webpage: A History of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties<http://www.nps.gov/tps/standards/history-of-standards.htm>. The new page features a timeline of the major events and publications that formed the foundation for the current versions of the Standards and Guidelines.
