HISTORIC CEMETERIES COMMISSION MEETING SITE CHANGED

The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, originally scheduled to meet in Paisley from 1 – 4 p.m., today, will meet via conference call instead. The commission will discuss position papers and other issues related to historic cemeteries.

The commission is a body of seven volunteers from around the state who work to document and support the preservation of Oregon’s more than 800 historic cemeteries.

EVENTS SET TO CELEBRATE ARCHIVES MONTHS AT OSU SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, ARCHIVES

Three events highlighting Oregon history and OSU’s archival collections will take place in the Willamette Rooms of the OSU Valley Library, from noon to 1:00 p.m., during October to celebrate Oregon Archives Month.

Recently opened, “The Rural World” exhibit offers a glimpse into the rural endeavors such as beekeeping, orchard cultivation, kitchen gardening, producing dairy products and wool, and brewing. Providing sustenance since early times, these activities formed the backbone of rural economies in Oregon.  The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday – Friday, through March 20 at the OSU Libraries Special Collections and Archives Research Center, 5th floor of the Valley Library (121 The Valley Library, Corvallis).

On tap today is a screening of films about beer and vintage television beer commercials, including the OPB documentary “Beervana”, to celebrate OSU’s Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives. Attendees will sample a smorgasbord of homegrown Oregon flavors such as apples, honey, hops, and cheese for during “Eat Like a Local: Treats from the Past” on Oct. 24. Or, celebrate with your own historic creation using recipes from the ‘Chives<http://wpmu.library.oregonstate.edu/osu_archives/2014/10/09/taste-of-the-chives-2014-the-recipes/>. On Oct. 30, performances on film will feature “Day of the Dead” inspired plays by Milagro, a Latino-based theatre group from Portland. CONFEDERATED TRIBES SET HISTORY CONFERENCE FOR NOV. 14, GRAND RONDE

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde will hold a History Conference from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 14, at the Tribal Gymnasium (9615 Grand Ronde Rd., Grand Ronde). Conference speakers include Ken Ames, Stephen Beckham, Robert Boyd, Tom Connolly, Rebecca Dobkins, David Lewis, Jennifer O’Neil, Mark Tveskov, and more. WESTPAS “ARE YOU READY? TESTING YOUR DISASTER PLAN” WORKSHOP SET FOR NOV. 17

“Testing your Disaster Plan and Collaboration Among Heritage Institutions to Improve Disaster Preparedness for Collections”, a workshop sponsored by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) will take place from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Nov. 17 at the Oregon Historical Society (1200 SW Park Ave., Portland). Workshop instructor Barclay Ogden, of University of California, Berkeley, will lead attendees though a test of their disaster plans with this scenario-based and collaborative workshop.

Staff from heritage institutions, including museums, historical societies, libraries and archives will assess their plan’s vulnerabilities and explore how collaborations can help in responding to a disaster.
