ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION TO MEET IN EUGENE

Oregon’s State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation will consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places in a two-day meeting on Feb. 19 (commencing at 12:30 p.m.) and Feb. 20 (commencing at 1:30 p.m.) at the Hilton Conference Center, 66 East 6th Ave., Eugene.

The committee will review proposed nominations for the Pilot Butte Canal Historic District in Deschutes County and individual properties in Madras, Bandon, Gresham, Albany, Portland, and the Leaburg and Williams areas. The Committee also will consider the petition to decrease the boundary of the National Register-listed Irvington Historic District, previously listed in 2010. Nominations recommended by the SACHP go to the National Park Service, which maintains the Register under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS WITH SAA CONTINUING EDUCATION

The Society of American Archivists (SAA) is offering an introductory records management workshop for archivist with records management duties, March 23 – 24 at Willamette University’s Mark O. Hatfield Library in Salem. The workshop will provide an overview of records management principles and practices, and tools to use for establishing or continuing a records management program.

Attendees will gain an understanding of basic records management terminology and a basic understanding of electronic records management; conduct a records inventory at their organization; write a records retention and disposition schedule; and learn to recognize the legal requirements for records management. NPI OFFERS SEMINAR ON GIS FOR CULTURAL RESOURCE PROJECTS IN SALEM

The National Preservation Institute (NPI) is offering two seminars titled GIS: Practical Application for Cultural Resource Projects. The first session will take place April 28-29 and the second will take place April 30 – May 1. Held in cooperation with the National Park Service, Cultural Resources Geographic Information Services, the Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, both seminars will take place in Salem.

Attendees will review introductory geographic information system (GIS) concepts combining spatial technologies and database management systems in the area of historic preservation. They will also learn how to use GIS applications for identification, evaluation, protection and preservation of cultural resources. From assisting with inventories, to mapping historic districts and battlefields, to mitigating the impact of disasters on historic areas, heritage organizations can use GIS technology to provide a better basis for planning and decision-making.

NATIONAL MAIN STREETS OFFERS CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

National Main Streets is offering scholarships for ten lucky recipients to attend the National Main Streets Conference in Atlanta. Made possible by the National Park Service (NPS), the scholarships are available to Certified Local Government (CLG) staff and commissioners. AASLH ACCEPTING NOMINATION FOR LEADERSHIP IN HISTORY AWARDS

The American Association for State and Local History is accepting nominations for the Leadership in History Awards, which recognize excellence in the field of state and local history. The nomination deadline is March 1.

Established to encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans, the publicly recognized award serves as an inspiration to others in the field. AASLH recognizes excellence in the following areas: exhibits, public and educational programming, special projects, publications, multimedia, and individual achievement.

Applicants can self-nominate or nominate another project. Nominees need not be members of AASLH to qualify. Organizations of all sizes are encouraged to apply! NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2015 AMERICA’S 11 MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for its annual list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. The list helps to shine the spotlight on threatened historic places, furthering the efforts of preservation through local support of these unique and irreplaceable treasures that make our communities special.  Since the list began in 1988, just three percent of featured sites have been lost.

Nominations need not be famous, but they must be significant within their own cultural context, illustrate important issues in preservation and have a need for immediate action to stop or reverse serious threats. To nominate a historic site in your community, visit the America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places page at the National Trust website<http://www.preservationnation.org/issues/11-most-endangered/>. The nomination deadline is March 2. The Trust will announce the list of winners in June. OHS RECRUITING REFERENCE SPECIALIST

Oregon Historical Society (OHS) is currently recruiting for a Reference Specialist. Under the supervision of the Reference Services Coordinator, the Reference Specialist works closely with other staff in providing reference and information assistance to patrons of the research library. This position requires work on Saturdays

The Reference Specialist is responsible for introducing patrons to reference materials in all formats and providing bibliographic instruction in research methods and database use. Additionally, the Reference Specialist maintains reference collections including but not limited to books, serials, microfilm, government documents, digital materials, video and audio materials, and biography and subject files.

LANE COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM SEEKS EXHIBITS CURATOR

The Lane County Historical Museum is seeking an exhibits curator. The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and computer experience using Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. Experience working in museums, cultural organizations, or for non-profit organizations is a plus. The person in this position must work will independently and as a team member, and have the ability to climb stairs.
