HERITAGE COMMISSION SET TO MEET FEB. 2 IN OREGON CITY

The Oregon Heritage Commission will meet at 12:30 p.m., Feb. 2 at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, 1726 Washington St., Oregon City. Agenda items include issues related to Oregon heritage sites, organizations and activities, including the application to be designated the first Oregon State Heritage Area. The Commission will tour the proposed Willamette Falls State Heritage Area at 9 a.m., prior to the meeting, but will make no decisions during the tour.

People attending the meeting should report on arrival to the interpretive center’s reception area for directions to the Wagon 3 meeting room. The meetings are accessible to people with disabilities. Call (503) 986-0655 up to 72 hours in advance to make special accommodations.

ROPER RETIRES FROM STATE PRESERVATION POST

Roger Roper is retiring as assistant director at the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and as deputy state historic preservation officer.

“I would like to personally thank Roger for his contribution to OPRD and to the heritage and preservation communities,” said OPRD Director and State Historic Preservation Officer Lisa Van Laanen noting Roper’s 35 years of preservation work. “He has transformed the SHPO world here in Oregon and aligned the heritage and preservation work beautifully within the OPRD mission. His service is highly commended and he will be missed here at OPRD.”

For the immediate future, Chrissy Curran, who has been the associate deputy state historic preservation officer, will take over Roper’s duties.


“SMOKE SIGNALS” AMONG NEW TITLES NOW AVAILABLE AT HISTORIC OREGON NEWSPAPERS

Historic Oregon Newspapers recently added new titles to its online collection, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and funding from University of Oregon (UO) Libraries donors.

Smoke Signals (1978-2013)<http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn93050714/>, the current newspaper of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde; Weekly Chemawa American (1901-1910)<http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/ca15001324/> and The Chemawa American (1914-1915)<http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/2003238611/> – both student newspapers from the Chemawa Indian School; as well as the Klamath Tribune (1956 – 1961)<http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/2004260350/> are all available for viewing through the Historic Oregon Newspapers website<http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/2003238611/>.

TRAVEL OREGON OPENS NOMINATIONS FOR HERITAGE TOURISM AWARDS

Nominations are open for the Oregon Travel and Tourism Industry Achievement Awards, which recognize outstanding accomplishments during 2014. The award for natural or cultural heritage tourism recognizes incorporation of Oregon’s authentic cultural or natural history as a device to draw visitors to the state. Recognition of award recipients will take place during the Oregon Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Eugene on April 12.

WILLAMETTE FALLS LEGACY PROJECT SEEKS RFP

The Willamette Falls Legacy Project is requesting proposals for the completion of a Cultural Resource/Cultural Landscape Report. The Project’s goal is to provide Oregonians with an opportunity to rediscover the Willamette Falls, a cultural and scenic treasure. A public vision and master plan are taking shape, with the goal of transforming a 23-acre industrial site nestled along Falls in historic Oregon City. The next step is the creation of a publicly accessible Willamette Falls Riverwalk.

The Cultural Resouce / Cultural Landscape Report will serve as a working document to assist in the creation of the Riverwalk along with other goals for the site as outlined in the Willamette Falls Framework Plan.
