STATE MUSEUM GROUP ELECTS NEW BOARD MEMBERS, OFFICERS

The Oregon Museums Association elected Caroline Brooks of the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Lincoln City, its new president at its annual meeting this week in Pendleton.  Sarah Baylinson of the Bowman Museum, Prineville, was elected vice president.

Other new board members include Claire Blaylock of the Clackamas County Historical Society, Niles Reynolds of the Klamath County Museums, and Nicole Yasuhara of the Oregon Historical Society. For more information about the association, visit www.oregonmuseums.org<http://www.oregonmuseums.org>

STATE ARCHIVES LAUNCHES NEW EXHIBIT THIS WEEK

The Oregon State Archives opens a new exhibit "I found it in the Archives" on Oct. 15 as part of its Oregon Archives Month activity, which includes a special event Oct. 31.

Intriguing stories abound in the records housed in the Oregon State Archives. The exhibit highlights some of the records unearthed by researchers, volunteers and staff that illustrate the more unique records, as well as the ways that these records have been used. Family history researchers, academics and the media have tapped into the resources available online and in the holdings to explore facets of Oregon's history that illuminate common and not-so-common
experiences.

The State Archives will also host an open house from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 31 that will include tours, other fun activities, exhibit viewing and research opportunities. The State Archives is located at 800 Summer St. NE, Salem.


FIELDWORKERS WORKSHOP SET FOR OCT. 24 IN EUGENE

"The Fieldworker's Toolkit" - a hands-on workshop series for graduate students, emerging professionals, and community scholars - will take place at 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at the University of Oregon. The registration deadline is Oct. 20.

Nathan Georgitis, the university's digital collections librarian and archivist, will share skills and insights into the essential work of managing fieldwork archives. Participants will learn to manage collections of fieldwork data for preservation and access, including care and handling of media collections, digitization for preservation and access, management of born digital files, indexing and metadata, and file management. MOURNING PRACTICES, CEMETERY HIGHLIGHTED IN SOUTHERN OREGON

Southern Oregon Historical Society curator Tina Reuwsaat will speak on the customs and origins of Victorian mourning practices at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at the society's History Center, 106 N. Central Ave., Medford. She'll touch on funeral practices, social restrictions, customary dress and sentimental keepsakes, and show unusual artifacts from SOHS and personal collections.

At 11 a.m. Oct. 25 historian Terry Skibby will lead a tour at the historic Ashland Cemetery. Wear comfortable shoes and meet at the entrance to the cemetery on East Main in Ashland, behind Haggens (Safeway).
