GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR VETERANS AND WAR MEMORIALS

Oregon Heritage of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is offering grants for the construction or restoration of veterans and war memorials. New monuments should recognize veterans and wars not already recognized.  Grants for restoration could be used for broken monuments, missing elements of monuments, or the related design elements of monuments for veterans or earlier wars such as World War I. Grants may also fund the addition of elements to existing monuments.

MINDYOURCOLLECTION.ORG ADDS STATE STATUTES AFFECTING COLLECTIONS

Mindyourcollections.org, Oregon Heritage’s portal for collections care information, adds links to Oregon State statutes that affect museums. Statutes address things such as loans, abandoned property, archaeological objects, city museums, etc. You can access this information by visiting here<https://mindyourcollections.org/collections/>. Knowing the law as it pertains to your museum collections is important and should be considered when creating or updating your collections policies.


PROPOSED EASTMORELAND HISTORIC DISTRICT NOMINATION IN PORTLAND AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW

The Oregon State Historic Preservation Office has posted the draft nomination for the proposed Eastmoreland Historic District in Portland online at their website at http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/NATREG/Pages/index.aspx and invites the public to comment by attending the meeting below or addressing comments to Oregon State Historic Preservation Office at 725 Summer Street NE, Suite C, Salem, Oregon, 97301-1266.

Oregon’s State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (SACHP) will consider the nomination for the Eastmoreland Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in a two-day public meeting on February 16 & 17, 2017 at Eastmoreland Golf Course, 2425 SE Bybee Boulevard, Portland, OR 97202.

The proposed Eastmoreland Historic District is located in Portland, Multnomah County.  It encompasses approximately 475 acres and is generally bounded SE Woodstock Blvd on the north; SE Cesar E Chavez Blvd and SE 36th Ave on the east; Berkeley Park and SE Crystal Springs Blvd on south; and SE 27th and 28th Ave on the west. INTERN POSITION AVAILABLE AT OSU SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND ARCHIVES RESEARCH CENTER

Oregon State University's Special Collections and Archives Research Center is participating in a LSTA grant project to digitize the papers and photographs of naturalists William F. Finley, Herman T. Bohlman, and Irene Barnhart Finley.  The intern will assist with various aspects of the project:
- enter metadata used to access the digitized manuscript files based on a data dictionary created by the Center for Digital Scholarship and Services in conjunction with Special Collections and Archives Research Center.
- ingest that content into Oregon Digital
- refolder or take other steps to preserve the original materials appropriately
- write a post about the project for the Special Collections & Archives Research Center’s “Speaking of History” blog.

Required Qualifications: Course work or experience with applying metadata to archival collections
Preferred Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in a related field
The intern will work an average of 12 hours a week, or 312 hours total, over a six month period of the project.  Work hours will be scheduled Monday - Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 pm. at OSU's Valley Library. Will require working on site in Corvallis, Oregon.
Hourly wage: $12.50 per hour.

CALL FOR PAPERS – “COMMEMORATIONS” SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS

Abstracts or proposals for papers or work-in-progress reports are solicited for the 2017 annual meeting of the Marion Dean Ross/Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.  The meeting this year will be held June 16-18, 2017, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.  This year’s theme is “Commemorations.”

According to the National Park Service, a commemorative property is important not for association with the event or person it memorializes, but for the significance it has acquired after its creation through age, tradition, or symbolic value.  Please join us in Victoria, B.C., June 16-18, 2017, to celebrate commemorations, especially the Canada 150 celebrations (1867-2017), the 100th anniversary of the US National Park System (2016), the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (2016), and the Parks Canada’s Centennial (2011).  We will also be recognizing Victoria’s Centennial (1962) by reflecting on the on-going significance of Victoria’s 1965 Centennial Square.  Topics germane to the theme will be encouraged, but those covering any aspect of the built environment of the Pacific Northwest or beyond will be welcome.  Abstracts will be blind peer-reviewed by the SAHMDR Review Committee.

Submission Guidelines: The abstract should be no more than 300 words and should fit onto a single-sided page.  A single separate page should include the author’s name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address with a brief, 100-200 word paragraph biography or one-page curriculum vitae.  Indicate in your abstract whether you intend to deliver a twenty-minute paper or a ten-minute work-in-progress report.  Ideally, submissions should be analytical or critical in nature, rather than descriptive, and aim to make an original contribution.  Electronic submission of proposals is preferred.

Abstracts are due on or before March 15, 2017, and authors of papers chosen for presentation will be notified by April 15, 2017.  Completed manuscripts of accepted papers must be submitted in full to conference organizers by June 1, 2017.  Authors shall retain copyright, but will agree that the paper can be deposited for scholarly use in the chapter archive in the Special Collections & University Archives, University of Oregon Libraries.

American Association for State and Local History Invites Nominations for 2017 Leadership in History Awards Program

The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) invites nominations for the 2017 Leadership in History Awards<http://aaslh.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=beatty@aaslh.org&job=2715384&ymlink=65388245&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fabout%2Eaaslh%2Eorg%2Fawards%2F>. Now in its 70th year, the Awards Program is the most prestigious national recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of local, state, and regional history. AASLH initiated the Awards Program in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout America.

Nominations are due on March 1, 2017. A list of state award representatives who can advise nominees can be found at the AASLH website. Nominations are then reviewed by a national committee in the summer of 2017 with formal presentation of the awards made during the 2017 AASLH Annual Meeting, September 6-9, in Austin, Texas.
