PACIFIC CITY'S DORY DAYS DESIGNATED AN OREGON HERITAGE TRADITION

Dory Days, a festival celebrating local fishing culture, now in its 57th year is the newest Oregon Heritage Tradition designated by the Oregon Heritage Commission.

Dory Days is the 13th event designated an Oregon Heritage Tradition. The others include the Oregon State Fair, the Pendleton Round-Up, the Klamath Basin Potato Festival and the Linn County Pioneer Picnic.

The festival takes place this Friday-Sunday (July 15-17) in Pacific City. A banner will presented Friday evening of the event.

"The Heritage Commission wants to recognize those traditions that have helped define the state," said Eric Martin, the commission's chair. "These events truly celebrate what is local heritage in Oregon."

"Volunteers invite everyone to celebrate and understand the dory boat and the fishing tradition that is so deeply part of Oregon culture," said Dave Larkins, with the Pacific City Dorymen's Association. "Dory boat launches, a parade, artisan fair and a new exhibit about dory boat history are featured events. Its proceeds support local scholarships, youth programs and fish hatchery projects."

Pacific City is "The Home of the Dory Fleet" as noted on the town's banners. The naturally protected harbor is ideal for the dory boats that launch and land from the beach. This annual event honors a 90 year fishing tradition.

An Oregon Heritage Tradition must have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years, demonstrate a public profile and reputation that distinguishes it from more routine events, and add to the livability and identity of the state. OREGON IRON INDUSTRY FEATURED IN ONLINE RESOURCE

Oregon Iron Chronicles<http://www.oregonironchronicles.com/> is a compilation of 70 years of newspaper articles about Oregon's pioneer iron industry and is intended as a resource for historians and curious time-travelers. In addition to providing eye-witness accounts of mining and iron making, the articles reveal the influence of the iron industry on the development of Portland and Lake Oswego. They detail battles over water rights, protests against Chinese labor, shipments of pig iron to San Francisco, the erection of cast-iron fronted buildings, pipe contracts for the Bull Run water system, and the curious saga of the Willamette Meteorite. This website, www.oregonironchronicles.com, was created by historian, writer and illustrator Susanna Campbell Kuo.

OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY SEEKS ARCHIVES SPECIALIST

Oregon Historical Society is seeking an Archives Specialist for a full-time position to work on a grant-funded digitization project. Working under the supervision of the Library Deputy Director and with a team of experienced archivists, the Archives Specialist will digitize photographs from the Oregon Journal newspaper. The successful candidate will have experience in digitizing photographs, demonstrated understanding of archival description and materials, familiarity with metadata standards and controlled vocabularies, and strong communications skills. REGISTRATION OPEN FOR OREGON MAIN STREET BUILIDNG REVITALIZATION WORKSHOP

Join us in beautiful downtown Astoria September 15-16 for the Building Revitalization Workshop and Evening of Excellence Celebration!

Evening of Excellence: Help us celebrate the 2016 award-winning projects representing the best of downtown revitalization in our main street communities! The banquet and awards celebration will be Thursday, September 15, 6 to 9 pm, in the McTavish Room at the historic Elsinore Theater. The banquet is hosted by the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association. Tickets are $35 for the banquet.

Building Revitalization: Formulating a Strategy Workshop - September 15, 1 to 5 pm & September 16, 8 to noon; Judge Guy Boyington Building, 857 Commercial Street. The workshop is free but registration is required.

The purpose of the workshop is to help communities participating in the Oregon Main Street Network learn how to work with business and property owners on major restoration and renovation projects. This workshop is strongly recommended for main street program staff and volunteers, as well as downtown business and property owners. This workshop is part of a series of trainings offered by Main Street this year to help communities get prepared to apply for the new Oregon Main Street Revitalization Grant. Featured speakers include staff from the Preservation Program at Clatsop Community College and other special guests. Content includes:


*         learning about historic commercial building styles;

*         an introduction to the Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation;

*         how to gather resources to help with the design of the project (e.g., historic information   including historic use, alterations, photos),

*         building codes (fire, life, safety, accessibility, energy);

*         documenting existing conditions;

*         exploring adaptive re-use opportunities;

*         identifying funding sources;

*         identifying project partners;

*         developing a feasibility plan; and putting together the plan; and

*         special preview of Restore Oregon's new Preservation Toolkit!
