LEGISLATORS RETURN HOME; CAPITOL READIES FOR HERITAGE CONFERENCE

The 2016 Legislature adjourned this week at the Capitol, and that means you can begin making plans to attend the Oregon Heritage Conference<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx> there May 4-6. Registration will be opening soon.

The conference theme is "16 Going on 20, 50, 100: Reflecting on the Past, Capitolizing on the Present and Building the Future." The theme highlights several major heritage anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the first meeting of the Oregon Heritage Commission and the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Bob Beatty, the chief operating officer of the American Association for State and Local History, and historian Reiko Hillyer of Lewis and Clark College in Portland, will be the keynote speakers. The topics of many of the workshops, sessions and other events are on the conference website.

Oregon Heritage, a division of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, is organizing the conference. Conference attendees will include community leaders, staff and volunteers from historical societies, museums, archives, historic cemeteries, ethnic organizations, schools, historic preservation commissions, humanities groups, Main Street programs, the tourism industry, economic development, staff from local, state, and federal governments, genealogists and professional historians and preservationists.

The conference includes workshops, tours, inter-active sessions, receptions, the Oregon Heritage Fellows, and the annual Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards.


RESTORE OREGON TO HIRE PRESERVATION PROGRAMS MANAGER

Restore Oregon wants to hire a preservation programs manager<http://restoreoregon.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/FieldProgs-Mgr-rev-02-25-16_webPost.pdf> to manage its statewide advocacy and education programs; provide leadership on preservation-related regulatory policy, legal, and legislative issues throughout the state; build strong relationships with regional constituents; identify and support opportunities to make the organization economically sustainable; manage programs staff.

Restore Oregon is a statewide 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to preserve, reuse, and pass forward
Oregon's historic resources to ensure livable, sustainable communities. Applications are due March 15.


CHAMPOEG SEEKS HERITAGE GARDEN RANGER

Champoeg State Park has an opening for a Park Ranger 1<https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/oregon/jobs/1366940/seasonal-park-ranger-1-champoeg-state-heritage-area-garden-ranger>. The job will run from April to September.  It would be a good fit not only for a person looking for summer work but also someone looking to begin employment with Oregon Parks and Recreation. It is an entry level permanent position. Ideal candidates would be from the fields of history, horticulture, master gardeners, or parks and recreation management.

This position is a unique Park Ranger 1 whose primary focus is on the 1860s homestead garden. Responsibilities include preparing, maintaining and interpreting the garden with the help of volunteers and other park staff. These responsibilities contribute to and are part of the overall living history/interpretive program.

Applications will be accepted until March 10.


DISASTER PLAN TESTING PLANNED FOR APRIL 8

A workshop "Are You Ready? Testing Your Disaster Plan & Furthering Collaboration Among Heritage Institutions To Improve Disaster Preparedness for Collections" will take place April 8 at the Oregon Historical Society in Portland. Sponsored by the  Western States & Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS), it will be taught by Kris Kern of the Portland State University library.

The free workshop will help heritage organizations improve disaster preparedness and response. It will assess organizational vulnerabilities and test disaster plans, explore collaborations, and build a shared vision for disaster preparedness.
