OREGON HERITAGE MENTORS AVAILABLE FOR FREE COLLECTION ASSESSMENTS

The Oregon Heritage MentorCorps is a state-wide network of volunteers trained in a variety of heritage-related skills including collection management, emergency preparedness, non-profit administration, education, and more.

Mentors are available to help heritage organizations prioritize collection projects by providing a free collection assessment. The goal of an assessment is to enable library, museum, and archival staff to develop or improve their overall collections care program, and to establish preventive conservation as an integral part of the organization's mission. If your organization has a collection and you just don't know where to start, getting an assessment from a Mentor would be a great first step!

SACHP MEETS JUNE 15-16 IN REDMOND

Oregon's State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation will consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places in a two-day meeting on June 15-16 at Redmond City Hall, 411 SW 9th St, Redmond, 97756. All sessions will in the Civic Room beginning at 12:45 pm on June 15, and at 9 am on June 16.

The Committee will review proposed nominations for the Redmond Downtown Historic District, Peacock Lane Historic District in Portland, Crater Lake Rim Road, and individual properties in Roseburg, Merlin, Eugene, Portland, and Carlton. Nominations recommended by the SACHP go to the National Park Service, which maintains the Register under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Members of the Committee hold credentials in many historic preservation-related fields.

ALBANY REGIONAL MUSEUM SEEKS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Albany regional Museum, a non-profit organization in Albany, Oregon, is seeking a qualified candidate for Executive Director.  The successful candidate will bring leadership experience in fundraising, grant writing, marketing, financial management, operations and an ability to work cooperatively with community leaders, board of directors, staff and volunteers. The Executive Director working closely with the Board of Directors, is a strong and dynamic leader who understands, supports and promotes the mission of the organization, financial plans, and programs. The Executive Director is expected to attend exhibit openings, board meetings, and fundraising and public relation activities. This individual will act as the primary spokesperson for the museum, creating partnerships, supporting fund-raising campaigns, and promoting the museum as a community asset.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR WMA EXCELLENCE AWARDS

It is important to strive for and celebrate excellence within the museum field. It is how we, as museum professionals, improve our work and ultimately create more profound connections with our communities.The Western Museums Association (WMA) supports furthering the museum profession through the Charles Redd Award for Exhibition Excellence and the Director's Chair Award.

Award Deadlines: July 14, 2017

Charles Redd Center for Western Studies Award for Exhibition Excellence: Did you or a colleague create an innovative exhibit about the American West in 2016 or 2017? Every year, the WMA honors excellence for an exhibition that furthers the study and understanding of the American West. The award is funded by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University, and the recipient discusses the winning exhibit during the Storytellers Luncheon.

Director's Chair Award: This Award is a chance to recognize unsung heroes of our profession, and not necessarily just for directors. This recognition is designed to showcase and acknowledge outstanding achievement in the museum profession. The Director's Chair Award is presented annually to an individual who has had a significant and lasting impact on museum practices or the museum profession in the Western Region. Please note that nominees can be working in any discipline. The Award is presented to the recipient during the 2017 Annual Meeting.

ODOT NEEDS YOUR INPUT ON URBAN DESIGN ISSUES

ODOT is beginning work on an initiative to develop new guidance and tools to assist agency staff and consultants planning for and designing ODOT roadways in urban areas.
