FREE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESS AND IDENTIFICATION WEBINARS

This webinar series, funded by The National Endowment for the Humanities<http://www.neh.gov/>, and presented by the Image Permanence Institute is free and open for all to attend. The first three webinars will discuss the various materials and technologies of photographic prints. The next two will teach a methodology and controlled vocabulary for process identification, as well as a demo of how to use Graphics Atlas<http://www.graphicsatlas.org/>. The last one will include an overview of collections care for prints and photographs including proper storage, handling and display methods, and guidelines for the storage environment. Watching the webinars as a series is encouraged but not required. Recordings of the webinars will be made available.

ONLINE COURSE FEATURING PRESERVATION OF PAPER AND MEDIA COLLECTIONS

Perseveration 101: Preservation Basics for Paper and Media Collections
Registration Deadline:  May 12, 2017

The interactive online course presents a series of 10 webinars and includes self-paced study between sessions, using assigned readings and other resources to supplement the "classroom" discussions.  The course is designed to provide a foundation for effective collections stewardship by guiding participants through preservation topics such as environmental management, deterioration of materials, and emergency preparedness.

The updated course features expanded coverage of audiovisual and digital formats, prepares participants to complete a preservation needs assessment, and provides structured guidance on developing an institutional disaster plan.

WHEN:
A two-hour session, once a week, starting June 1, 2017, and ending August 24, 2017.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
-  Staff and volunteers at cultural institutions
-  Town clerks, county commissioners, and other municipal records holders
-  Corporate archivists and records managers in need of preservation training
-  Students or graduates of library and information science

PRESERVATION MONTH EVENTS ACROSS THE STATE

Here are some Preservation Month related events happening in Oregon this month:

Deschutes County: Celebrate the heritage of Deschutes County during May, a month dedicated to engaging in historic preservation. The Deschutes County Historical Society, Deschutes County Historic Landmarks Commission, City of Bend Landmarks Commission, City of Redmond Landmarks Commission, and the Deschutes Land Trust partner to celebrate the myriad of ways that historic preservation enhances our quality of life. With a full schedule of events, it is easy to understand why This Place Matters. Lake Oswego: Your House Matters Expo, Sunday, May 7, 1pm-4pm. Oswego Heritage House, 398 10th Street, Lake Oswego, OR 97034. An afternoon of helpful information to make your house more livable for today while maintaining the character of your house and neighborhood. The event will begin with guest speaker, Rachel Verdick, local building designer and preservationist. She will discuss why your older home is significant, not just to you personally and financially, but also to your neighborhood and community. Afterwards, an open house with vendors will provide examples, demonstrations, and help answer your questions. Come with photos and/or questions about your house. Partners include the Lake Oswego Historic Resources Advisory Board, Lake Oswego Preservation Society, and Oswego Heritage Council. Corvallis & Benton County: May is Historic Preservation Month, and in Corvallis, Oregon, that means an entire month full of tours, presentations and more. Join us and celebrate the history of Corvallis and Benton County! Most events are free and open to the public. Some require reservations. Albany: Albany has long been synonymous with history and heritage. From their concentrated "collection" of Victorian Era architectural wonders to their seasonal tours of historic sites, graveyards, and living history displays, the city is passionate about retaining its roots to the past. National Preservation Month is an opportunity to celebrate Albany's historical treasure with events (most of them free) throughout May. Multnomah Historical Association: This organization is dedicated to preserving the history of Portland's southwest neighborhoods. There will be a Historic Preservation meeting on May 7 and displays at the Multnomah Art Center. For more information visit http://multnomahhistorical.com/.

Eugene: "Bodies of Work: Art in the Cemetery" is the theme of this Memorial Day Weekend Celebration at the Historic Eugene Masonic Cemetery and Hope Abbey Mausoleum, 25th and University, Eugene. The cemetery gates will be open from 11:30am to 5pm on Saturday, May 27th, Sunday, May 28th, and Monday, May 29th. Taps will be played at noon each day at the Public Square and flags will fly over veterans' graves. Tours of the cemetery will be offered on Saturday and Monday after taps..The Plein Air Painters of Lane County will have paintings displayed in Hope Abbey, and they will also be seen creating their work in the cemetery during the weekend.  "Before" and "After" pictures, which will provide visual evidence of the progress the Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association has made in improving the appearance and condition of the cemetery, will be displayed in Hope Abbey where cake and coffee will be served every afternoon.
