OREGON MAIN STREET HIGHLIGHT: ASTORIA

26 Oregon Main Street communities recently received an Oregon Main Street Revitalization grant<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/Pages/News.aspx>. This is the first year of this grant program and some great projects will be taking shape in Main Street Communities across the state. This week's Oregon Main Street Highlight on the Oregon Exchange Blog features Astoria and some of the things happening in one of our Performing Main Street communities. Astoria received two of the grants, one to rehabilitate the Merwyn Building for 40 apartments and retail space and another grant to complete façade restoration and weatherization of the Riviera Building. To learn more about what's happening in Astoria visit this week's blog post on the Oregon Heritage Exchange<https://oregonheritage.wordpress.com/2017/05/11/oregon-main-street-highlight-astoria/>.

2017 PACIFIC NORTHWEST PRESERVATION FIELD SCHOOL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

The 2017 Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School will be located at the Fenn Ranger Station in the Nez Perce National Forest, Idaho. Each session has a specific theme, but all will entail hands-on-work, documentation, and various preservation related activities-including field trips. Evening lectures will focus on the week's special theme, but can and will delve into other areas of preservation.

The Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School curriculum is designed to attract participants from all walks of life including practicing cultural resource professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, and novices with little background in the field but who possess a love for heritage and a desire to learn. The University of Oregon's Historic Preservation Program developed this Field School to provide participants with the opportunity to experience preservation firsthand.

The field school is intended for anyone interested in working in a hands-on environment and getting experience working with preservation craftspeople in the spectacular Pacific Northwest. The typical class varies in age, skill, background, and interest, but the common thread is always enjoyable learning. Incoming graduate students in the Historic Preservation MS Program are required to enroll for at least one session as part of their graduation requirements. Many participants have used the field school to launch into historic preservation, and many graduates of the University of Oregon's program got their start at the Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School.

Dates: August 13-September 15

Applications are due June 1, 2017

For more information on sessions, cost, scholarships, and to apply visit http://hp.uoregon.edu/2017-pacific-northwest-preservation-field-school.

OMA WORKSHOPS ON BASKETRY MAY 22

Do you have a basketry collection or a piece you need to identify? Want to know if it was made regionally, nationally, or internationally? Or, are you just interested in knowing more about basketry? If so, join the Oregon Museums Association, the Registrars Committee-Western Region<http://www.rcwr.org> and Margaret Mathewson on May 22, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Benton County Historical Museum<http://www.bentoncountymuseum.org> in Philomath, Oregon.

Workshop Details:
During this workshop, Margaret will demonstrate the proper care, storage, and handling of basketry. She will discuss analysis: including techniques, materials and attribution of origin. Margaret will talk about proper practices for housing and cleaning baskets, and basketry identification. As well, she will discuss the philosophy of not repairing baskets, rather leaving a basket in its current state so as not to compromise later study. Feel free to bring a piece from your collection to use as your specimen for the day!

We will be providing a bag lunch, and you're invited to continue your conversation with fellow attendees over a light tea from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Workshop Fee:
$35 for OMA and RC-WR members;
$50 for non-members which includes an OMA or RC-WR annual membership.

How to Register:
Register online<http://www.oregonmuseums.org/event-2524669> to secure your spot, as space is limited.
If you prefer to register by mail, download a registration form<http://www.oregonmuseums.org/resources/Pictures/SpringWorkshopRegistrationForm.pdf> and mail it to the address provided on the form.
