In 1995, four Coquille Tribal members embarked on research project to Washington, DC, hoping to find archived records of tribal history, language, and culture. They returned with nearly 60,000 pages of materials. What happened next changed Oregon's history.

Native scholars have written extensively on decolonizing museums that feature Native American history and culture. But is it possible to truly change the Euro-American model that most cultural museums offer? Join anthropologist, curator, and activist Deana Dartt (Chumash) and explore ways that museums can interrupt historic, European-American narratives and apply indigenized practices across every facet of the museum.

A change to the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services program this year allows applicants to request awards of up to $75,000.

LANE COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM SEEKS PART-TIME DIGITAL ARCHIVIST

Part-time, 20-24 hrs/wk. $12.00/hr. Requirements: Proficiency with both Mac and PC. Experience with Adobe Photoshop, scanning and cataloging software. PastPerfect experience and graphics talent a plus. Proficiency with spreadsheets. Must be able to work independently on repetitive tasks, supervise volunteers, and be available for some weekend work. Previous experience with museums, cultural organizations, or non-profits a plus. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and climb stairs. OREGON TOURISM COMMISSION OPENS LARGE GRANTS PROGRAM

At its public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Oregon Tourism Commission voted to open their Competitive Large Grants program for applications. The Commission further chose to designate $2.5 million dollars from the current fiscal year and an additional $2.5 million dollars over the course of the 2017-2019 biennium to initially fund this program. Eligible projects may be funded over more than one biennium. The program grants funds to eligible applicants for projects that contribute to the development of the tourism economy in communities across the state in support of Travel Oregon's mission of “a better life for Oregonians through strong, sustainable local economies.”

Competitive Large Grant applications are for grants greater than $100,000 and must demonstrate at least a 50 percent cash match. Large grant awards are intended to create statewide impacts or impact multiple regions. Eligible projects must provide for the improvement or expansion of the tourism economy in Oregon by showcasing the state on a national or global stage or is a world-class asset.

HISTORIC ASSESSMENT REVIEW COMMITTEE MEETS OCT. 17 IN SALEM

The Historic Assessment Review Committee will meet at 9:00 am on October 17 at the North Mall Office Building located at 725 Summer Street NE, Room 124A, Salem. Agenda items will include overview and highlights of the 2017 Special Assessment Property Tax benefit period, passing of bylaws, election of co-chair, and discussion on the future of the program which sunsets in 2020. The committee will invite public comments.

State law established the five-member Historic Assessment Review Committee to be the review body for appeals from property owners participating in the Special Assessment Property Tax Program for Historic Properties.
