HISTORIC CEMETERY EVENT FEATURED IN OREGON HERITAGE EXCHANGE BLOG

If you have not already heard, October is Historic Cemeteries Month! The most recent post on the Oregon Heritage Exchange Blog<https://oregonheritage.wordpress.com/2017/10/25/who-knew-sharing-cemetery-history-could-be-so-much-fun/> features the Friends of Jacksonville's Historic Cemetery and their popular living history event, Meet the Pioneers. Programs such as these really highlight the history that can be learned and shared in our local historic cemeteries. Don't forget to check the local historic cemeteries near you to see if they have any events this weekend, because in case you did not know, Halloween is less than a week away!

2018 OWHC RESEARCH FELLOWHIP APPLICATIONS DUE NOV. 1

The Oregon Women's History Consortium offers two research fellowships to support scholarship that will lead to a significant contribution in the field of Oregon women's history.

PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY OPEN HOUSE NOV. 6 AT PIONEER CEMETERY IN SALEM

The City of Salem Historic Landmarks Commission in collaboration with the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office and Willamette University will be hosting a Public Archaeology Open House on Wednesday November 8, 2017 at the Salem Pioneer Cemetery, located at Commercial St SE and Hoyt Street SE, from 10:00am- 2:00pm to provide the public an opportunity to view the excavation of the Chinese Shrine as it is progressing.

DEADLINES APPROACH FOR NATIONAL COUNCIL ON PUBLIC HISTORY AWARDS

NCPH awards recognize excellence in the diverse ways public historians apply their skills to the world around us. The purpose of the award program is to promote professionalism and best practices among public historians and to raise awareness about their activities. Awards are presented to recipients during the annual meeting.

Outstanding Public History Project Award - $1,000 recognizing a project-digital, print, film, exhibit, etc.-that contributes to a broader public reflection and appreciation of the past or that serves as a model of professional public history practice.
NCPH Book Award - A $1,000 award for the best book about or growing out of public history published within the previous two calendar years (2016 and 2017).
Excellence in Consulting Award - Up to two(2) $500 awards recognize outstanding work and contributions by consultants or contractors.
New Professional Award - Two $500 travel grants to encourage new professionals, practicing public history for no more than three years, to attend the 2018 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Robert Kelly Memorial Award - This $500 award honors distinguished achievements by individuals, institutions, or nonprofit or corporate entities for making history relevant to individual lives of ordinary people outside of academia.
Graduate Student Travel Award - Five travel grants of up to $300 each for graduate students presenting (session, poster session, or working group) at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Student Project Award - The $500 travel grant to attend the 2018 Annual Meeting recognizes the contributions of student work to the field of public history.

SOCIAL SCIENCES DRAFT SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE

Your input is sought in reviewing the Draft 1 of the Oregon Social Sciences Standards revisions.  You will find the surveys at http://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/socialsciences/Pages/2017-Draft-Standards.aspx.  You may review the standards by grade level or by content area.  We are asking for both your general perceptions about the standards and for specific edits to the standard statements.

You will notice that the standards include a new strand - Ethnic Studies.  This strand consists of standards that also appear in the civics and government, economics, financial literacy, geography, history, and Social Science Analysis strands.  The Ethnic Studies strand is meant to emphasize the kind of instruction that is expected in Oregon classrooms.  The strand will also provide a home for the work that will be coming from the HB 2845 committee.  It will also support the curriculum work from SB 13 from Oregon's nine federally recognized tribes.

Results from these Draft 1 standards surveys will be used to make changes in the drafts.  Schools and districts should not align curriculum or instruction to the Draft 1 standards at this time.  A second round of surveys will be made available to review any changes made in Draft 1 standards.

Pacific and Clatsop Counties are known throughout the region for their tourist attractions, but how long has it been since you visited these sites?
