2018-2023 SHPO PRESERVATION PLAN OPEN FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

As part of its mission, the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in partnership with the community creates a statewide historic preservation plan every five years to identify what is special about Oregon and how best to preserve it for future generations. The plan addresses identifying and preserving historic places, educating the public about the State's history, and building support for the organizations that curate our cultural legacy.

A draft of the 2018-2023 Preservation Plan is now open for comment through October 12, 2017. This plan was created using information gained from a public survey, six public meetings across the state, and workshop sessions with various commissions and work groups including the State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, Oregon Historic Trails Advisory Commission, and the Intergovernmental Cultural Resource Council, a working group of federal and state agencies and tribal governments.

The public comment period will be open through October 12, 2017 and the public is encouraged to provide general comments in addition to focusing on the issue statements, goal statements, and objectives outlined in the plan.

Did you know that October celebrates so many great things related to heritage? October is Archaeology Month, Archives Month, AND Historic Cemeteries Month.

We know there are many organizations out there doing public programs related to one of these three areas and would love to get the word out in the weekly editions of the Oregon Heritage News throughout the month of October.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT OHS

The Oregon Historical Society is once again offering the Donald J. Sterling, Jr., Fellowships in Pacific Northwest History at the Oregon Historical Society. The Society offers two Fellowships each year-a Senior Fellowship ($2,500), which is open to all applicants, and a Graduate Research Fellowship ($2,000), which is restricted to candidates for advanced degrees. Fellows will be in residence in the OHS Research Library for four weeks during the calendar year following the award (not necessarily in one block of time). Applicants for the Fellowship need not be professional historians, but they must have experience in historical research and writing. Preference will be given to scholars who have suitable research topics, who have the potential of making a significant contribution to historical scholarship on Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, and who evidence the ability to write an article-length manuscript for OHQ. REQUEST FOR STORIES OF WILDFIRE IMPACT

A note from the Oregon Art's Commission regarding the wildfire impact:

When we undertook the development of the Arts Commission's first disaster preparedness and response program a few months ago, we had no idea it would become all too relevant with fires raging across Oregon and other disasters dominating national headlines.

Our first concern is the safety and well-being of those of you who live and work in the regions directly impacted by the wildfires. We have had many reports of how the fires, and the resulting poor air quality, have had adverse consequences including the cancellation of events and performances. We are very concerned about the fires' impact on arts and culture organizations and communities throughout Oregon.

If your organization has been adversely affected by the wildfires, through evacuation, the cancellation of events or performances or a reduction in visitors, etc., please let us know.

We are collecting stories of impact so that we can better explore and seek out resources that might be available to help the affected organizations. Understanding that the adverse impact continues as long as the fires are burning, and perhaps long after they are out, we also ask that you keep us updated if there are additional consequences. WILLAMETTER FALLS HERITAGE AREA LECTURE IN NEWBERG SEPT. 21

Willamette Fall Heritage Area Coalition's Heritage Talks Series continues on Sept. 21 at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg. David Lewis, of the Grand Ronde Tribe, will speak on the Kalapuyan People and their Trade and Traditions. The event is free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the Talk begins at 6 p.m.
