KIM S. MORELAND OF TIGARD APPOINTED TO OREGON HERITAGE COMMISSION

Kim S. Moreland of Tigard has been appointed by Governor Kate Brown to a four-year term on the Oregon Heritage Commission.

Kim S. Moreland is a project manager for Prosper Portland where she is responsible for managing redevelopment projects and investment priorities for the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area roughly located within N/NE Portland. She has over 22 years of urban planning and community development experience. Additionally, Moreland serves on the board of directors for the Bosco-Milligan Foundation and is the vice-president of Oregon Black Pioneers. On behalf of Oregon Black Pioneers, she authored Images of African Americans of Portland (Images of America), an Arcadia Publishing pictorial history. She has also co-curated two exhibits created by Oregon Black Pioneers in partnership with Oregon Historical Society: "Community on the Move" and "Racing to Change: Oregon's Civil Rights Years."

"It is an honor to be appointed to the Oregon Heritage Commission. I look forward to working with my colleagues to engage all Oregonians in understanding our Oregon heritage and to foster a broader and more inclusive interpretation of the history of our great State," noted Moreland about her appointment. "We are excited to have someone with a background that spans historic preservation and cultural heritage interpretation," said Beth Dehn, Heritage Commission Coordinator. "Moreland will bring valuable insight to the Commission."

The Heritage Commission is comprised of nine people representing Oregon's heritage and geographical diversity. There are also nine advisory representatives from state agencies and statewide organizations.

The mission of the Heritage Commission is to secure, sustain, and enhance Oregon's heritage by ensuring coordination of heritage initiatives by public and private organizations; advocacy on its behalf; education of the public about its extent and value; and promotion and celebration of its diversity. For more information, commission coordinator Beth Dehn at 503-986-0696 or Beth.Dehn at Oregon.gov<mailto:Beth.Dehn at Oregon.gov> or visit the Commission's website at www.oregonheritage.org<http://www.oregonheritage.org>.

SHUTE-MEIERJURGEN FARMSTEAD LISTED IN THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

The Shute-Meierjurgen Farmstead in Hillsboro is among Oregon's latest entries in the National Register of Historic Places.

The 1890 Shute-Meierjurgen Farmstead is located in the heart of the original Edward and Brazilla Constable "Five Oaks" donation land claim (DLC), approximately 3.3 miles northeast of downtown Hillsboro. The Shute-Meierjurgen Farmstead is locally significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture as an excellent and increasingly rare example of a late 19th-early 20th century farmstead within the immediate vicinity of the City of Hillsboro (within the current Urban Growth Boundary) which has maintained good integrity of setting, location, design, association, materials, workmanship and feeling. The house, reflecting the typical cross-wing form of the late-nineteenth century farmhouse combined with Classical and Queen Anne stylistic ornamentation popular at the time, indicates the somewhat elevated economic status of the Shutes, mostly due to the diversified income developed by Shute. The barn is a largely intact, fine example of an early twentieth century hay and livestock barn, and the garage is an almost completely intact, purpose-built pre-1920 automobile storage building. Together, the farm buildings well represent the last identified collection of primary farm buildings of a late-nineteenth and early twentieth century farmstead within the UGB around Hillsboro, and is increasingly rare in the larger vicinity around the city. The period of significance is 1890-1919, beginning with the year of construction of the original portion of the house and ending with the construction of the garage, the last building of the farmstead.

Oregon's State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation recommended the district's nomination during their February 16, 2018 meeting. The Shute-Meierjurgen Farmstead is now one of eleven listings in the National Register in Hillsboro. The National Register is maintained by the National Park Service under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
