OREGON SHPO SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), part of Oregon Heritage within the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, is recruiting an intern(s) to assist with several historic preservation projects and other related work from June -September 2018.

Preference will be given to graduate students in programs related to historic preservation or have a historic preservation emphasis. Coursework or practical experience in conducting architectural surveys and preparing nominations to the National Register of Historic Places is desired. Selected interns will work closely together to assist with several historic preservation projects, including reconnaissance and intensive level architectural surveys, National Register nominations, façade design assistance, public presentations to interested parties, Certified Local Government meetings and reviews, historic property site visits, Section 106 processes and other preservation projects, both as a way to assist the SHPO in its duties and to expose the intern to a variety of SHPO programs. Work includes actual projects to be completed to further SHPO programs and preservation in Oregon.

The selected intern must be able to travel daily to the SHPO in Salem to work on projects and have a flexible schedule that accommodates occasional overnight travel in other areas of the state. Experience using databases and photography is highly preferred. Research and writing skills are also highly desirable.

Compensation will be in the range of $12.31-$16.71 per hour, up to 480 hours. Per Diem for overnight travel includes lodging, transportation and meals. SEVERAL OREGON HERITAGE GRANTS NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATION

The following grants are now open for applications:

-          The Preserving Oregon Grants fund preservation of historic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Work may include non-maintenance preservation like window repair, roof work, foundation projects, and plumbing and electrical needs. Recently funded projects include preservation of the IOOF cabins at Paulina Lake, the Floed-Lane House in Roseburg, and Gaiety Hollow in Salem. The program also funds significant work contributing toward identifying, preserving and interpreting archaeological sites. Archaeology projects were funded in Douglas and Lincoln Counties and along the coast.

-          The Diamonds in the Rough Grants help restore or reconstruct the facades of buildings that have been heavily altered over the years. These grant return buildings to their historic appearance and potentially qualify them for historic register designation (local or national). Façade projects in Astoria, Baker City, Burns and Cave Junction were funded in the last cycle.

-          The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries is offering grants for qualified historic cemeteries. The annual grants<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/FINASST/Pages/grants.aspx> fund projects that preserve historic cemeteries. Projects funded in the past include marker repair workshops, fencing, signs, interpretive panels and brochures, security lighting, access improvements, records management, and more. Awards typically range between $1,000 and $8,000, but have been higher.

-          The Oregon Heritage Commission is offering grants to qualified museums for collections, heritage tourism, and education and interpretation projects. Awards typically range between $2,000 and $10,000. Museums may apply for a variety of projects, including of the following examples. Collections projects may include cataloging, archival storage, disaster preparedness and conservation. Heritage tourism projects may include museum marketing and promotions, enhancing visitor experience, and training for museum staff. Education and interpretation projects may include exhibits, online education, school classes, workshops and camps. Museums may also partner with other organizations for projects that might be outside the museum, but still meet the museum's mission.

Staff is happy to talk with applicants about potential grant projects, review applications and assist with the online grant system. Free grant workshops on project planning and grant writing and using the online grant application will be available. Workshops will be in Salem on March 8 and 13. Webinar workshops will be available on March 15 and 22.

CONVERSATIONS WITH FUNDERS EVENTS ACROSS THE STATE FEB.-MARCH

More than $5 million in funding will be on the table when Oregon Cultural Trust Manager Aili Schreiner joins with colleagues from the Cultural Trust's Statewide Partners and other funders Feb. 6 through March 8 for "Conversations with Funders and Partners," a 14-stop state tour. Attendees will learn about grant programs available from multiple grantmakers and will have the opportunity to discuss their projects and programming. Other statewide programming resources also will be presented.

Representatives from the Statewide Partners -- the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage, Oregon Humanities and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office -- will be joined by counterparts from The Oregon Community Foundation and Portland's Regional Arts and Culture Council for some of the events.

Organizations encouraged to attend "Conversations with Funders and Partners" include libraries, arts organizations, museums, cultural centers, historical societies, arts alliances, literary groups and heritage organizations. All cultural nonprofit organizations are welcome.

Among the grant opportunities discussed will be the Cultural Trust's 2018 Cultural Development Grants; grant guidelines will be posted on the Trust website Monday, Feb. 5, with an April 13 application deadline (see details below).

"Conversations with Funders and Partners" begin Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Northeast Portland and are scheduled in regional flights. Registration is not required.

CHANGES TO NATIONAL TRUST PRESERVATION FUNDS GRANTS PROGRAM

Please note changes to special program within the National Trust Preservation Funds Grant Program. Not only are the Johanna Favrot Fund and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund now offering up to $15,000 in grant funding, but they are also covering brick-and-mortar projects-a unique feature to these two funds within the National Trust Preservation Funds grant program.
Applications for both funds are due March 15. Learn more about these two funds:
