2018 OREGON HERITAGE CONFERENCE KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCED

Jeannette Pearce, Executive Director of Detroit Experience Factory, will be the Keynote Speaker at the 2018 Oregon Heritage Conference<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx>.

On April 12 at the Oregon Heritage Conference<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx> in Bend, Jeanette will present Grounding Change, Engaging People. Detroit, historically used as a cautionary tale,  has recently become a media darling and a destination for many looking to escape the rising intensity and costs in America's biggest cities. As a place's popularity grows it becomes even more important to tell the story of the people that have been there all along: the small businesses, neighborhood organizations, and longtime relationships that made the city what it was before many gave it a second look. During this keynote, Jeanette will share lessons learned from Detroit and speak about her work lifting up the stories of lifelong residents as well as helping newcomers better understand and authentically connect with their new home.

Jeanette Pierce is a social entrepreneur and lifelong city resident who grew up in the Morningside neighborhood on the east side of Detroit. She has a bachelor's of arts degree in communication from Aquinas College, and has been walking to work since she moved to downtown Detroit in 2003...which is pretty much unheard of in the Motor City. In 2006 she founded a grassroots nonprofit that used tours and experiences to take people beyond the headlines and educate them about Detroit's history, culture and community. Today that organization has evolved into the Detroit Experience Factory<http://detroitexperiencefactory.org/> which operates the only Detroit Welcome Center and creates eye-opening experiences and innovative resources that connect locals and visitors to Detroit's people, places and projects. Over 95,000 people have taken a tour in the last 12 years to learn about Detroit's assets, small businesses, historic neighborhoods, city planning & development policies and innovative solutions to the challenges the city faces. She has presented at more than 100 events including the Downtown Las Vegas Alliance's Annual Meeting, The City of Chicago's Neighborhood Organization Workshop and the International Downtown Association's Urban District Forum. She was honored by Crain's Detroit Business as one of the Top Twenty in their 20's, has been awarded the Shining Light Future Leader Award from the Detroit Free Press, Shooting Star Award from MichBusiness and the Detroit Young Professionals Vanguard Award.

Jeannette will also be leading a conference session. The Community Experience Workshop will give attendees the tools to create experiences and resources that tell the story of how their community got to where it is today, what's happening now and most importantly what they want it to be in the future. These interactive experiences can help connect residents and stakeholders to the people, places and projects that make each community unique and increase civic engagement in the community.

ONE WEEK LEFT TO APPLY FOR THE 2018 OREGON HERITAGE EXCELLENCE AWARDS!

The Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations for outstanding efforts on behalf of Oregon heritage, drawing public attention to these efforts, and raising the quality of heritage-oriented activities.

Nominations are encouraged for organizations and projects of all sizes and heritage purposes and for volunteers and professionals from all heritage sectors. To review the application and/or to apply, visit http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/award_info.aspx.

Awards will be presented on April 12, 2018 at the Oregon Heritage Conference<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx> in Bend by Oregon Heritage, part of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

The announcement for 2018 awardees will be made in mid-March 2018. Tickets for the awards presentation will be made available in February.

DID YOU HEAR? THE 2018 OREGON HERITAGE MUSEUM GRANT IS OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS!

The Oregon Heritage Commission is offering grants to qualified museums for collections, heritage tourism, and education and interpretation projects. Awards typically range between $2,000 and $10,000.

Museums may apply for a variety of projects, including of the following examples. Collections projects may include cataloging, archival storage, disaster preparedness and conservation. Heritage tourism projects may include museum marketing and promotions, enhancing visitor experience, and training for museum staff. Education and interpretation projects may include exhibits, online education, school classes, workshops and camps. Museums may also partner with other organizations for projects that might be outside the museum, but still meet the museum's mission.

"This program is versatile enough to serve museums of all sizes," said Oregon Heritage Commission coordinator Beth Dehn. Past projects included a speaker series at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, electrical work at the Gilliam County Historical Society, storage materials for the Klamath County Museum and the Shelton McMurphy Johnson House in Eugene, interpretation at Washington County Museum and Cannon Beach History Center and a living history cemetery tour in Lincoln City.

While the grant applications are online, they are simple and there is plenty of support to complete them. Free grant workshops on project planning and grant writing and using the online grant application will be available. Workshops will be in Salem on March 8 and 13. Webinar workshops will be available on March 15 and 22.

The Heritage Commission is comprised of nine people representing Oregon's heritage and geographical diversity who have been appointed by the Governor. There are nine advisory representatives from state agencies and statewide organizations. The commission's mission is to secure, sustain, and enhance Oregon's heritage by ensuring coordination of heritage initiatives by public and private organizations; advocacy on its behalf; education of the public about its extent and value; and promotion and celebration of its diversity.

OREGON HISTORIC CEMETERIES COMMISSION TO MEET BY PHONE FEB. 2

The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries will meet at 1 p.m. February 2 via conference call. Agenda items will include a statewide cemetery clean-up day, current projects and upcoming plans. State law established the seven-member Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries to maintain a listing of all historic cemeteries and gravesites in Oregon; promote public education on the significance of historic cemeteries; and obtain financial and technical assistance for restoring, improving and maintaining their appearances. MARITIME HERITAGE EVENT IN COOS BAY JAN. 21

On Sunday afternoon, 21 January 2018, DROP ANCHOR: Sharing our Maritime Heritage will highlight the various facets of the Coos Bay region's rich connection to the sea. As a prominent international port and major West Coast shipping locale, ocean-going ships brought new immigrants, international news, and exotic cargoes to the quays of Marshfield and North Bend. The region also had its fair share of maritime disasters as evidenced by those buried or memorialized in the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery. Living on Coos Bay, we continue to have our lives touched by the sea. Please join us; feel free to attend any or all of the activities of your choice.

Maritime Memorials
Explore the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery, the final resting places of some of the captains, sailors, shipbuilders, and men of the life-saving service who shaped the maritime history of our area.

Gather in the Galley
Gather in the Marshfield High School Cafeteria to mingle and share your own stories of the area. Meet representatives of local organizations showcasing their work with the marine environment.

Stories of the Sea
Hear The Doodad Shanty Boys sing songs of the sea followed by stories of local maritime encounters.

CZARINA Memorial Dedication
Assemble at the southwestern corner of the cemetery for a short ceremony and the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to the 23 men on the CZARINA "whose lives and destinies were claimed by the sea."
