Is your organization prepared for a disaster?

Last summer, fires tore through the gorge and came close to several heritage organizations. The National Museum of Brazil recently suffered a dramatic loss of their heritage due to a disaster. Disasters come in many shapes and sizes, and certainly at any time. The latest post on the Oregon Heritage Exchange looks at how Maryhill Museum of Art used the most recent fires as the impetus to update their emergency preparedness plan so they are prepared if such an event occurs in the future. Just a reminder that the Oregon Heritage Pocket Response Plan (PReP) is a very basic two page disaster response resource for those that want something in place now while they develop a more thorough response plan. Tribal Open House Nov. 8 at Coos History Museum

The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw<https://ctclusi.org/> are having an open house<https://ohs.org/events/tribal-open-house.cfm> on Nov. 8, 6pm-8pm, at the Coos History Museum. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn from tribal representatives and scholars about the Tribes' history, art, lifeways, and contemporary efforts to protect resources and maintain cultural resilience. Examples of tools, languages, and artworks will be provided, with opportunities for individual or small-groups discussions with tribal members. Don’t miss the closing ceremony, complete with traditional stories, songs, and prayer.

Patricia Whereat-Phillips (Patty) is a Miluk Coos Descendent and enrolled tribal member of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians. She was raised on Kentuck Slough with an understanding and an interest in her tribal history. Patty studied biology at Oregon State University and linguistics at University of Oregon. She has been passionately striving ever since to restore the knowledge of ethnobotany and native languages to her tribal people. Through this journey, Patty has become a talented traditional story teller.

State Capitol events in November

Exhibit: World War I – An Oregon Perspective
Through Nov. 14 in the Galleria, free
In 1914, a complex web of secret alliances, long-simmering grudges, widespread unrest and other unique circumstances finally collapsed in on itself, and the world descended into total war. Called the "war to end all wars," World War I would feature fearsome new weapons and technology, ultimately claiming the lives of over 10 million people — about one-third of them civilians. Like all states and nations, Oregon would have a role to play. There are many stories from our state of courage and devotion that could be told. Contained in this exhibit are only a few. '100 Years of Oregon Veterans' is a cooperative partnership between the Uniform Display Museum/VFW Marion Post 661, the Oregon Secretary of State's Office and the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs. This exhibit is sponsored by the Capitol History Gateway, a project of the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.

A Tribute to Veterans
Friday, Nov. 9, noon-2pm, free
Pay tribute to our military veterans at our annual event. The presentation of the colors, a choral performance, an exhibit, and a speaker series presentation will be on this year's program.

Grants available for Veterans and war memorials

Oregon Heritage of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is offering grants for the construction or restoration of veterans and war memorials.

Local governments and federally recognized Tribes are eligible to apply for work on monuments on public owned properties.

New monuments should acknowledge veterans and wars not already recognized in the community.  Grants for restoration may be used for broken monuments, missing elements of monuments, or the related design elements of monuments for veterans or wars. Grants may also fund the addition of elements to existing monuments.

Projects must include the active participation of a veteran organization.

Past funded projects include repair to the Doughboy monument in Astoria, a new monument in Warrenton, and additions to the large memorial in Washington County.

City of Astoria set to honor Veterans of First World War

The Doughboy Monument’s restoration work, located in Astoria’s Uniontown-Alameda National Register Historic District, will be mostly completed by the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I on November 11, 2018. A ceremony to recognize the contributions of Clatsop County citizens in World War I, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of the War, and to celebrate the completion of the Monument’s restoration will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2018, at 1pm at the Astoria Library, Veterans’ Flag Room, 450 10th St., Astoria.

Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) applications open

Want to improve collections care at your small museum? Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) applications are now being accepted. This program provides small to mid-sized museums with partial funding toward a general conservation assessment. Applications are due by Feb. 1.
