Coos History Museum seeks Executive Director

The Coos History Museum (CHM) is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial leader to accept responsibility for and further the growth of the museum's financial health, new program development, and management of the museum.  We offer an opportunity to manage, promote, and grow our valued organization with the help of an engaged board, experienced staff, and a large contingent of enthusiastic volunteers.  The deadline to respond is March 3, 2019.

Overview of the Coos History Museum:
The Coos History Museum creates a better understanding of life in Coos County and Oregon's South Coast, past and present, and our place in that life.  We do this by collecting and preserving stories, artifacts, photographs, and documents, and by helping create opportunities for people to interpret them in meaningful, thought-provoking, and engaging ways.

The Coos County Historical Society has had a presence in Coos County, Oregon, since 1891, and is the governing body for the Coos History Museum.  The museum has just celebrated its third year in its new $12 million facility on the Coos Bay waterfront, where expansive and exciting new commercial developments are under construction. In addition to a robust public program that includes permanent and changing exhibits, K-Grey educational programs, special events, and the operation of a museum store, we host community events via our event rentals program.  Our paid staff of 7 (FTE 5.5) includes a curator, education/program coordinator, marketing and special events coordinator, volunteer coordinator/museum store manager, visitor services assistant, and a bookkeeper.  We also have a volunteer force of 100 people, extensive community support, and a lovely small-town place to live.

The Museum plays an important community role, and is poised to expand that role as a thriving, stable and respected component of Oregon's Bay Area.  The Board believes this is a unique facility and opportunity, and we applaud applicants ready to lead this organization to the next level of accomplishment.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director is the chief administrative and financial officer reporting to the Board of Directors through its President, and is responsible for the implementation of board policy.  The Director will be the local "face" of the Coos History Museum. This position is an essential part of the organization's leadership team, ensuring the Coos History Museum meets its mission and strategic goals. The organization seeks a dynamic leader who is skilled at working with diverse groups, well-versed in non-profit leadership, and experienced in the supervision of volunteers and staff.

Veteran and War Memorial Grant due Feb. 15

Oregon Heritage of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is offering grants for the construction or restoration of veterans and war memorials.

Local governments and federally recognized Tribes are eligible to apply for work on monuments on public owned properties.

New monuments should acknowledge veterans and wars not already recognized in the community.  Grants for restoration may be used for broken monuments, missing elements of monuments, or the related design elements of monuments for veterans or wars. Grants may also fund the addition of elements to existing monuments.

Projects must include the active participation of a veteran organization.

Past funded projects include repair to the Doughboy monument in Astoria, a new monument in Warrenton, and additions to the large memorial in Washington County.

Applications are due Feb. 15, 2019.

Reminder: Registration open for Historic Cemeteries Cleanup Day, May 11

Oregon's historic cemeteries are set for a spring spruce-up during Historic Cemetery Cleanup Day on May 11. The event, organized by SOLVE and the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries (OCHC), is a volunteer-led effort across the state to care for and preserve Oregon's historic cemeteries.

Historic cemetery caretakers are encouraged to register<https://www.solveoregon.org/Cemetery-event-leaders> their properties for the event to access wonderful resources.

SOLVE offers several resources to cemeteries that are registered for the event:

  *   Free supplies like litter bags, vinyl gloves, safety vests and first aid kits.
  *   Volunteer recruitment tools including forms, online registration and liability coverage.
  *   Event flyer template.
  *   Possible grants for native species to plant.
  *   Advice on native plant species to plant for lower maintenance.
  *   Small grants and in-kind donation forms for business that provide food and other supplies.
  *   Project planning assistance.

"Oregon's historic cemeteries are sites of great cultural value," said Kuri Gill, historic cemeteries and grants coordinator with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD). "They face many challenges including litter, over-growth of invasive species like thistle and ivy, moss covered monuments and general neglect."

15 historic cemeteries and over 160 volunteers participated in the 2018 cleanup event. All told, volunteers collected nearly 300 pounds of trash and cleared 4,000 square feet of overgrown vegetation.

OCHC was established in 1999; its seven members coordinate the restoration and maintenance of historic cemeteries statewide and advocate for the importance of preserving Oregon's historic burial sites.

State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation meets February 22 in North Bend

The State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (SACHP) will meet at 9 a.m., Friday, Feb. 22 at the Mill Casino, 3201 Tremont Street, North Bend, OR 97459, and consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. The meeting is open to the public.

Friday's meeting agenda: a presentation by the national register program coordinator, and hearings of one delisting request and three proposed nominations. The committee will review a delisting request for the John M. and Elizabeth Bates House in Lake Oswego. The committee will review three proposed nominations: the Roy E. and Hildur L. Amundsen House, Gresham; the Oregon Trail: La Grande to Hilgard Segment, Union County; and the Q'alya ta Kukwis shichdii me Traditional Cultural Property Historic District, Coos County.

Nominations recommended by the SACHP go to the National Park Service, which maintains the Register under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

The SACHP is a nine-member governor-appointed citizen commission with credentials in many historic preservation-related fields.

Where are the Conversations with Funders this week?

More than $5 million in funding will be available when Oregon Cultural Trust Manager Aili Schreiner joins with colleagues from the Cultural Trust's Statewide Partners and other funders Feb. 12 through March 11 for "Conversations with Funders and Partners," a seven-stop series of application workshops. Attendees will learn about funding programs available from multiple grantmakers and will have the opportunity to discuss their projects and programming. Other statewide programming resources and application preparation guidance (three locations) also will be presented.

Participating will be representatives from the Cultural Trust's Statewide Partners - the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage, Oregon Humanities and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office - as well as counterparts from The Oregon Community Foundation (most locations), the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, Travel Oregon and Portland's Regional Arts and Culture Council (Portland location).

This week, the funders will be visiting the following locations:
