Need some financial assistance to attend a conference/workshop/training?

The Elisabeth Walton Potter Oregon Heritage Preservation Scholarship provides financial assistance for Oregon residents to attend a heritage preservation-related conference, workshop, or training in the United States. Eligible travel expenses include registration fees, transportation, lodging, and meals.

It is a competitive application process and scholarships will be offered to those actively involved in local preservation efforts and who demonstrate how attendance at a heritage preservation-related conference, workshop, or training will help meet the heritage preservation needs of their local community. Awards range from $500-$1,500, depending on applicant eligibility, priorities, criteria and the number of applicants. Applications that include some match are more competitive.

There are two rounds each year available. This round of scholarships is for events that occur between January 1, 2020-June 30, 2020. Deadline for applications is Nov. 22, 2019.

Eastern Oregon Visitors Association launches regional grant program

Call for applications! The Eastern Oregon Visitors Association (EOVA) launches regional grant program.  In alignment with the organization's mission to promote the Eastern Oregon visitor experience and to enhance and preserve the region's quality of life and economy, the grant program's key initiatives are to:

  *   Drive visitation from Eastern Oregon's key domestic and international markets.
  *   Develop destination-based products that are in concert with the Eastern Oregon's natural environment, support the stewardship of the state's resources and its rich history
  *   Tie into or enhance one of EOVA's marketing and development pillars of Outdoor, Cultural & Heritage, or Agritoursim.
  *   Provide strategic industry professional development and training opportunities

The Eastern Oregon Regional Grant Program is supported by the passage of House Bill 4146, through Travel Oregon, the statewide tourism marketing organization. Travel Oregon was required to establish a Regional Cooperative Tourism Program (RCTP) to invest twenty percent of the statewide lodging tax in Oregon's seven designated tourism regions. EOVA serves as the appointed Regional Destination Management Organization (RDMO) for the Eastern Oregon region and will implement the RCTP on behalf of the region.

A tribute to Veterans at the Capitol

Fifth Annual Tribute to Veterans event
Friday, Nov. 8, noon
Oregon State Capitol

The Tribute will start at noon with the presentation of the colors by the North Salem High School Army JROTC Color Guard in the rotunda, followed by a performance from the Oregon Spirit Chorus. The Oregon Spirit Chorus joined Sweet Adelines International in 2007. Since their first regional competition in 2008, the chorus has achieved first place in their division nine times. In 2015, Oregon Spirit competed at the International Harmony Classic Competition in Las Vegas earning third place. The chorus has 34 members and are under the direction of Kathy Scheel.

The Capitol is also hosting "The Second World War - An Oregon Perspective" exhibit from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education display through November 28. As part of the exhibit the VFW661 Uniform Display Museum will be displaying uniforms of Jewish soldiers in World War II.

Refreshments will be served in the Galleria and stick flags will be handed out while supplies last. This is a free event open to the public. Parking is metered around the Capitol. This event is part of the Capitol History Gateway Project and is sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation. Astoria building wins national contest and receives a grant

The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the winners of the Partners in Preservation voting campaign. 20 sites were in the running, including the Odd Fellows Building in Astoria, and the public could vote on these sites between Sept. 24 and Oct. 29. Over a million votes were cast during that period and the 13 sites with the most votes were awarded a share of a $2 million grant. This year the campaign placed a special emphasis on historic buildings and sites that celebrate the contributions of women on Main Street to honor the upcoming 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment.

Astoria's Odd Fellows Building was the only Oregon site in the running and they received the third highest number of votes and a share of the grant money. It's story as indicated on the voting site is as follows:

In a town of less than 10,000, in the oldest settlement west of the Rockies, proudly sits the Odd Fellows Building in downtown Astoria. A center for social, cultural, and creative activity, it was the first building the community chose to rebuild in 1923 after a fire devastated the town. Almost a century later, three local women purchased the building and, with an incredible amount of community support, saved it from developers.

Today, the building houses a gallery, apothecary, art studio, and coffee shop, as well as Astoria's only nonprofit dance studio and black box theatre-all owned and operated by local women. Funding will restore and weatherize the building's historic facade and windows to ensure it continues to serve the community for generations to come.
