Oregon Heritage Commiseration Call: Inclusive Organizations, Aug. 21
How do we make our Heritage Organizations more inclusive? How do we build bridges so outsiders become insiders who feel valued as heritage champions? Nina Simon, author of The Art of Relevance, shows us we must make the case our work is relevant as we invite people outside our existing circles into the culture of our organizations. If you're not familiar with her work, watch Nina's TED Talk at http://www.artofrelevance.org/ to learn more - it'll fit in a 15 minute break!
Our discussion will be facilitated by Stephanie Button with the Historic Downtown Kennewick Partnership. Stephanie graduated with a degree in Anthropology from Western Washington University, where she developed her interdisciplinary approach to creating opportunities for exchanges and dialogue with the purpose of building a culture of better understanding. Stephanie has more than a decade of nonprofit experience, most recently as the Administrator at the East Benton County Historical Society & Museum (EBCHS).

Oregon State Capitol hosts virtual Multicultural Day Aug. 15
Participants of cultural and heritage events, usually hosted at the Capitol as part of the award-winning Capitol History Gateway programming, have joined together to create Multicultural Day Reimagined. This Facebook event, sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation, will be celebrated Saturday, August 15, starting at 10 a.m. at https://www.facebook.com/events/779237482609193/. Join us online for family-friendly activities such as musical entertainment, dancing and storytelling.
This virtual event will feature specially recorded performances by our CHG partners and contain recordings of some past performances and video tours of heritage sites in Oregon. In addition, many groups will be sharing information about their communities and provide links to learn more about them. In all, approximately 45 partners contributed information to making this virtual festival happen.
For those who cannot join on Facebook, the Capitol will host a page of partner videos that will go live August 15 https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/capitolhistorygateway/Pages/multiculturalday-partners.aspx as well as the festival’s main page https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/capitolhistorygateway/Pages/multicultural-day-reimagined.aspx.

Documenting during COVID-19
In addition to adapting to new safety measures in order to re-open, several heritage organizations are trying to collect stories during the pandemic so they can document history as it is happening. You can see an article here<https://www.cnn.com/style/article/coronavirus-documenting-history-artifacts/index.html> about how historians are navigating this process.
Are you a heritage organization in Oregon that is documenting stories during the pandemic or collecting artifacts? Oregon Heritage staff would love to hear from you about this process and how you are reaching out to the community to gather these stories. Please email heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov> to give is some insight into your experience and process while documenting during the pandemic.
